*blinks* Did... did you just call Lee Ann Womack's "I Hope You Dance" cheesy? I think we have a clash of cultures here. I remember my Sophomore year roommate finally asking me what the point of "Who I Am" by Jessica Andrews was. "Who cares who she is?" I made one stab at explaining the importance of having deep roots to him, but gave up the effort afterwards. It just wasn't in his worldview why knowing exactly who and what you are, faults and triumphs, would be important.

The Dixie Chicks were actually atypical because they didn't buck the current trends in country at the time. Or, rather, they followed the male trends rather than the female artists. Many female country artists went for a more crossover pop sound, a trend that continues today (Taylor Swift and Lady Antebellum spring to mind). In fact, artists such as Faith Hill and Shania Twain were marketed in Europe, with slightly different instrumentation, as pop. Male artists continued to build on eighties and nineties country, and also reintroduced sounds from seventies and sixties rock. Looking at some of their hits from 2000-2001, the song titles read a lot closer to their male contemporaries, and many of the songs follow similar themes. They weren't the only ones to do this, mind (look up Teri Clark), but they were probably the biggest female group at the time to try it.

I so loved " I Hope You Dance " by Lee Ann Womack...  This was a great song and fits perfectly this moment...  I really prefer traditional country like Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, George Jones, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, etc...  I did love the Dixie Chicks but was never sure that I would have called them country...  I honestly hated most of the male country singers that came out right before and after 09/11, especially Toby Keith and Keith Urban, he is just too horrible for words...

I listened to Blake Shelton and wasn't that impressed by him, either. He had a rather hilarious mullet, which was fine by 1992 standards but just a little weird for a guy in 2000/2001.

Chapter 29

-When Will gets ready for his first official date.

"First Date" by Blink 182

-When Erik and Will talk about Marie, and Will gets clued on him about the extra scrutiny being put on him due to his popularity.

"Popular" by Nada Surf

I remember when the video came out when I was 10, the ending scene interested me for reasons I couldn't quite understand until the Backstreet Boys came along when I was 11 and jumpstarted puberty for me.

-When Will learns that Erik has HPV.

"Tainted Love" by Marilyn Manson

Had never heard the song or seen the video for Popular by Nada Surf, but it really fit the moment well.  I totally understand why the last scene made you feel what it did, even if you didn't understand it yet...

Really like the song by Blink 182; I actually thought they were one of the best bands of this era...

The Marilyn Manson fits as well but I was never as big of a fan of his...

Chapter 30

-When Will and Eric share their respective troubles, and then have some fun together.

"Turn Off The Light" by Nelly Furtado

-When Will is clued in on how to act at school by Darius.

"I'm Real" by Jennifer Lopez ft. Ja Rule

Holy Juicy Couture craze! I'd bet anything Ryan's mother has a whole closet of that stuff. It's hard to believe this now, but at the time J. Lo was biggest thing going on (bigger than Beyonce, even), although it wasn't based on actual talent so much as an ability to be okay at 3 things and really, really good at famewhoring.

Whenever anyone mentions Jennifer Lopez, the song that always comes to my mind is " Who Let the Dogs Out "...  I really think she has mediocre talent as a singer, no talent as an actress, but she does have a big butt and can dance really well...  That being said, your pic of "I'm Real" works perfectly for that moment...

Chapter 31

-When Marie manages to get herself banned from her first day of school.

"You're A God" by Vertical Horizon

-When Will squares down with Blake Leddington during lunch, and realizes that people are willing to follow him because of who he is, which doesn't exactly make him happy.

"Celebrity" by N'Sync

Chapter 32

-When Will has yet another one of his blow-ups with Brad, this time calling him on his hypocrisy.

"We're Not Gonna Take It" by Twisted Sister

-When Will "runs away" to the Stanford Shopping Center.

"Running With the Devil" by Van Halen

-When Brad expresses his concern about Will turning into a juvenile delinquent, while everyone else points out to him what a hypocrite he's being.

"Cherry Bomb" by The Runaways

I'm sorry, but Dakota Fanning could not pull off Cherie Curie that well . Kristen Stewart was fantastic as Joan Jett, though.

If you guys noticed, I used teenage youth rebellion songs from when Brad was either a teenager or an early 20-something. Yay for themes!

I really loved all the songs here, they were much more in general from the period of me growing up, god I feel old sometimes...  I cannot believe you thought that Kristen Stewart was good at anything...  I have seen pieces of furniture in films that had were better in them than any performance she has ever given...

Seriously though, check out The Runaways and Adventureland. She's really good in them.

Have seen them both and she ruined Adventureland for me and if not for the music would have completely ruined The Runaways for me...  I just really believe she could not act her way out of a wet paper bag...  Even Pia Zadora had more talent then Kristen Stewart...

That was a great choice, it really fit the whole chapter not just the scene with them....  I don't know if everyone comes over and checks out the picks you make for the music but they should.  I often go back and re-read the chapter with the songs you pick out and they really enhance my enjoyment...  Great job...

Chapter 34

-When Ferris is forced to write an apology note on Will's locker, which Will leaves up to further humiliate him.

"Rip Her To Shreds" by Blondie

-At lunch, when Will realizes that someone's got a little crush on him.

"Teenage Dirtbag" by Wheatus

-When Will founds out that Noah and John got into a fight, effectively ending any positive feelings he might have had about Noah.

"Seventy Times 7" by Brand New

I learned about this song because my friend Meghan had this group of friends. She was dating a sophomore(we were freshmen), and then she dumped him. The entire group of friends sided with him over her, and then she found a burned cd duct-taped to her locker."Meghan's Song" was written on the front, and this was the song her friends dedicated to her. As you can imagine, it was NOT a flattering thing. (I actually wound up keeping the CD because I really loved the song.)

You gotta love high school drama.

-When Will and JP arrive in New York City, and JP takes Will on a tour of the City.

"New York, New York" by Frank Sinatra

-When Will hangs out at the barbeque at Jeanine and Hank's place.

"Start the Commotion" by The Wiseguys

WOW, a lot of work matching songs to the moments in this chapter...  I really love Debbie Harry and Blondie.  This really fits the moment in the chapter perfectly.  I love the song New York, New York but have always really favored the Liza Minelli version.  I think it has more depth and passion; plus I was never a huge Frank Sinatra fan; I always thought he was a better actor than singer.  I had never heard of the song by The Wiseguys; but it was pretty cool...

 Chapter 35

-When JP and Will talk while setting up the presentation, and then Will realizes that JP is having some nookie in the bathroom.

"Manic Monday" by The Bangles

I thought it was such a shame that the Bangles were so underrated. They were true musicians, not just a bunch of sex kittens.

-When JP gives his presentation about Vietnam to Columbia.

"Eve of Destruction" by Barry McGuire

-When Will flirts with a college boy and scores himself an invite to a college party.

"I Do" by Toya

-When Will talks to JJ while he shops on 5th Avenue.

"Moon River" from Breakfast at Tiffany's

Tell me you guys couldn't see a 25-year old JJ, wearing a slimcut black suit, eating a pastry while standing outside the Tiffany's window.

-When Will has yet another fight with Brad.

"One Step Closer" by Linkin Park

Really great choices!  I'm usually in for a Linkin Park song, but pulling out Barry McGuire's song was just masterful.

WOW, these were all just wonderful choices...  I really loved The Bangles as well, I thought they were so much better than some of the other females groups of that era.  Eve of Destruction was just a inspired choice as well.  I can totally see JJ as a Audrey Hepburnesque type with huge shades in front of the iconic window...

It works on so many levels, right? About the Vietnam War, which Barry McGuire called out as being a bad deal in 1965 when people were still supporting it, and in a foreshadowing bit, as the sunny, optmistic America of the mid/late 1990's that has a booming economy, a budget surplus, and no enemies- the one that Will, JJ, and Darius grew up in- is about to disapear forever.

Chapter 36

-When Will and Darius head to the Observatory, with Will bitching about his morning hangover.

"Last Night" by The Strokes

I thought the Strokes are a great example of where rock was going to head during this decade, as people got away from post-grunge metal/rap stuff like Korn and Limp Bizkit and the indie sound gained popularity. There's this, the White Stripes, Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse, The Shins, etc etc all coming up at this time period.

-When Brad and Stefan make their way out of the elevator.

"Theme" from The Towering Inferno

-When Will says his goodbye to his mother.

"Nearer My God to Thee" from Titanic

-When JP leans of the Towers smashing into the Towers.

"Across the Universe" by the Beatles

-When JJ is interrupted from his beauty sleep, and evacuates to Jeanine's house.

"Poses" by Rufus Wainright

-When the Palo Alto crew learns of 9/11.

"9/11 As It Happened"

"A Building Panic" from Titanic

-When Robbie leaves Darius and Will to try and get Hank and Jeanine out.

"Sacrifice" by Christophe Beck

-As Will and Darius continue going down, and Will locks eyes with a firefighter who's going up.

"War" from Pearl Harbour

-When JP walks among the wounded.

"Overcome" by Live

-When Sentator Danfield and a young tour guide check out the newly renovated wing of the Pentagon.
