Chapter 38

-When everyone is reunited. Almost.

"Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley

-When Robbie and Brad have one last phone call before the Tower collapses.

"Follow Me, Follow You" by Genesis

          or

"Leather and Lace" by Stevie Knicks and Don Henley

I picked this song because it's the song that I used to score the moment when Robbie fell into his coma during Be Rad, and Brad sat bedside. The alternate pick is "Leather and Lace" by Stevie Knicks and Don Henley, which is the song I used to score the moment in Man In Motion when Brad and Robbie promised to be partners for life. Either pick is kind of a full-circle moment, you know?

-When the South Tower Collapses:

South Tower Collapse- Run

South Tower Falls- Shot front of Trinity Church

-When Brad collaspes from the emotional strain of it all, and Will comforts him.

"Emotion" by Destiny's Child

Jeremy,

The Genesis song and Buckley were great choices.

Thanks. There's just something about contrasting a love song about always being there for each other against the last moment of a couple's relationship. And then Buckley's song really made the rounds for T.V. dramas in the 2000's.

The AC/DC song made me smile.

I used to hear that one at Tom Traver's Awesome 80's D.J. Show at Deer Park Tavern when I was 22...it was the closing song. And can't you just picture that song punctuating an explosion?

Hallelujah fit perfectly but I am going with the Leather and Lace for the last call...  And we all know how I feel about Destiny's " not talent " Child...

I actually thought this was a little too slow for JP's mood at the time, but I liked it anyway.

This one, on the other hand, was spot-on.

The playfulness of this song worked so very well!

I could clearly visualize Matt looking out at the paddock in sad introspection when I heard this playing.

1. Titanic was THE movie of the late 1990's, and aside from the parallels about people losing their innocence, we're also saying good-bye to the world of the late 90's, where the economy was booming, hope was abound, and peace was a given because the U.S. won over Russia.

2. Thanks. MTV suspended all of their programming during 9/11 and just ran videos instead, with scrolls at the bottom giving directions about donating to the Red Cross. This was a video that made the rotation a lot.

3. Yeah. I love that theme. I wanted something that conveyed playful, childish innocence.

4. Thanks. It's from when Beth died in Little Women. Thought it fit.

Chapter 40

-When Wade gets the news about his father, and it becomes Matt's turn to comfort him.

"Across the Universe" by Fiona Apple

I used this song to close out Bloodlines, when Matt was happily celebrating Father's Day, 1999 with his two different fathers, and Wade actually mentioned calling his father. I thought it fit as a "full circle" kind of thing.

-When Will and JJ grieve together.

"Glory of Love" by Bette Midler

-When Brad goes through the task of telling Frank that he's lost his beloved son.

"A Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procol Harum

-When Brad gets through his gut-wenching phone calls, and takes comfort in his two sons.

"Angel" by Sarah McLachlan

I just have to say what a great job you have done with the music pics over the last few chapters...  I love how you have pulled some of them from the past to compliment what is happening now.  The Bette Midler and the Procol Harum songs were just perfect at those two moments.

Thanks. When I first stared doing music recs, I had this rule that I wasn't going to back more than 3 years- it was all going to be from 1977-1980. Given that it was kind of a sucky era for music (transition periods usually always are), I eventually had to break that. So I generally try to keep things within a three-year period, the bulk of it, but oldies get thrown in as well. The only hard and fast rule I stick to is that I won't use music that came out after the year the story is set. I mean, of course, I used Linkin Park for scenes set in summer 2000 when their album didn't come until October 2000, but that's about as much fudging as I'm willing to do.

I think music acts like a time machine, in some way- it really has a way of connecting you to where you were and who you were when a certain song was popular. I hear The Way I Are by Timbaland, and I immediately connect to 2007/2008, when 22-year old me would dance my ass off to this song at bars and college parties. Or I hear Quit Playing Games With My Heart, and I remember the summer of 1997, when 11-year old me rushed over to a loudspeaker blaring this at the Italian festival and the total joy I felt singing along to this, while my sister and the carny guy she was flirting with looked at me like I was crazy.

The farthest back I can go is 1989, with She Drives Me Crazy by Fine Young Cannibals, We Didn't Start the Fire by Billy Joel, and Like A Prayer by Madonna...I remember seeing those on T.V. as a three/four-year old.

Chapter 41

-When Wade and Matt have morning/mourning talk.

"Porcelain" by Moby

-When the family has their grief counseling session.

"Dust in the Wind" by Kansas

-When Wade stands off with his mother and declares a truce.

"Killer Queen" by Queen

This is La Danfield's "theme" song that Mark picked out, so this one is to his credit.

Great choices Jeremy.  The Moby tune conveys sadness but strange optimism at the same time.  Well done.  Of course, the last rec was the best. :P

Your choices this chapter were just outstanding.  I really liked the songs by Bread, The Smiths, and The Cranberries.  I have always enjoyed Unchained Melody but wonder if something with a little more edge might have worked better for that one moment...

Thanks for you all do....

You've done really well with music recs, but I don't think you've ever done this good.  Wow.

The song by the Smiths was inspired, but the song by Bread was absolutely fantastic.  Especially when you think about why that song was written (about a son mourning the loss of his father).

Great job! :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs:

Thanks, Mark. I think the last time you were that effusive for a chapter was the one I did for If It Fits, so I take that as high praise.

I have always enjoyed Unchained Melody but wonder if something with a little more edge might have worked better for that one moment...

The alternative pick for that moment is this:

"Gonna Take A Miracle" by Laura Nyro and Labelle

I almost picked that, but I wanted something not quite so strong and overpowering...so I went with a quieter tune. I'm sure I'll eventually use this for Brad at some point, though.

Plus, Unchained Melody has the Ghost connection...Ghost is easily one of my favorite movies from my early 90's childhood. I probably saw that movie like 20 times on VHS before I was 9.

I was curious why you picked the Smashing Pumpkins cover of, "Landslide." I don't object, like I did with Tiffany's, "I Think We're Alone Now." It's just not the version I most associate with the song, and so am curious as to your thinking.

Fleetwood Mac's version is fantastic, and the best one. But there was something "gutteral" and grunge about the Smashing Pumpkins version, and that's why I went with it over the "pretty tone" that the original version has.

I became familiar with the Smashing Pumpkins version after seeing it on an episode of Cold Case, and I really fell in love with it.

I would have liked the Gonna Take a Miracle better for that moment but after you explained your reasoning, I fully understand why you went with what you did...
