Page Scrawler Posted December 22, 2021 Posted December 22, 2021 What do you look for in Urban Fantasy stories? What could the literary world use more of? For myself, I'd like to see more stories where magic is public knowledge, and integrated into mainstream society. I want to see elves using smartphones and posting selfies. Sirens singing in punk rock bands. A Wiccan barista who adds a shot of "Confidence" to a Chai Latte before your MC sits down to take those Nastily Exhausting Wizards Tests. What if Spam mail could cause hexes, or place a curse on someone you didn't like? If you have any ideas for ways that the Urban Fantasy genre could be improved, feel free to share them with us! 2

BigBen Posted January 10, 2022 Posted January 10, 2022 I like the works by Kate Griffin in what she calls the "urban magic" genre. They are very well conceived. It would appear that much of what you are looking for is found in her models. 1 2
Page Scrawler Posted January 10, 2022 Author Posted January 10, 2022 (edited) @BigBen Thanks for the suggestion, Ben. Although, I'm not seeking suggestions for reading; rather, I want to hear other people's thoughts on how the "urban fantasy" genre could be built upon. Edited January 10, 2022 by Page Scrawler 1
