Alexandria, Virginia

When the states of Virginia and Maryland ceded the ten mile square around the falls of the Potomac, which George Washington personally selected, the ports of Georgetown, Md. and Alexandria, Va. were included to give the new District of Columbia an economic base, complementing the new city of Washington.

Virginia took back its 32 square miles in the 1830s so Alexandria could continue operating as a slave port.

Newburyport, Massachusetts, USA

Nobody noticed that I threw in Innsmouth, Mass. the other day? Fictional city from the works of HP Lovecraft? Center of worship for the fish god Dagon, where most of the townsfolk are descended of carnal relations with Dagon himself, and so look and smell to varying degrees like fish?
