Been reading a new book series:

She Who Became the Sun (The Radiant Emperor series)

https://www.amazon.com/She-Who-Became-Shelley-Parker-Chan/dp/1250621801

The novel won several awards by the way.

It's an alternate take on how the Ming Dynasty ("wink" guess why I am writing my story "wink") would have been founded by a woman, who took on the role of her brother. Also, she marries the historical female wife, forming a power couple that kicked out the Mongolians from China.

Though I am a gay man, I am enjoying this sapphic story. Alternate history stories are rare with gay or lesbian main characters, and ancient Chinese stories are even rarer. This one might interest some people who are open-minded, enjoy historical fiction with an eastern flair, and want to explore how Chinese reverse gender roles/sapphic relationships could operate.

There's also a contrasting gay male relationship in the story, far less happy :(

@Krista I know you're looking for something different, might be a good novel series for you to explore.

Hope I'm sharing this correctly. Someone recommended the movie Big Eden on Facebook a few weeks back. I'd never heard of it but found it on streaming and after watching, immediately went online and ordered the DVD to add to my collection.

I found it touching, emotional, and super sweet, I positively loved the way Pike showed his love through cooking and trying to care for Henry and his grandfather. Big Eden

The synopses posted on IMDB reads: Big Eden is a tiny fictional town in northwestern Montana, as Preston Sturges or Frank Capra might have envisioned it. Timber and Cowboy country. This is the story of Henry Hart, a successful New York Artist, who returns to the town of his childhood to care for the ailing grandfather who raised him. Back in Big Eden, Henry must come to terms with his relationship to Dean Stewart, his best friend from high School, as well as the object of his unrequited love. All these years Henry has been pining for a dream image of Dean from back then. This is also the story of Pike Dexter, the shy, unassuming Native American owner of the town's general store, who is as surprised as anyone to find himself falling in love with Henry. The people of Big Eden conspire and attempt to bring Henry and Pike together

When I think about Big Eden, 'adorable,' comes to mind. I've watched it a few times.

I fell in love with it. Instantly, immediately. I usually have TV on as background. Not that morning. I was fully invested and now I can watch as often as I'd like.

It is a bit nostalgic, since I watched it a long time ago. Another film that I watched recently that I hadn't watched in ages, but remembered liking was, "Shelter." It has so many Late 90s/Early 2000s aspects about it. It made for an enjoyable trip backwards and the film over all is easy to watch.

I've been gravitating towards films like that of late. Big Eden, Shelter, Handsome Devil.

Ohh, thank you for giving me two movies I have not heard of (I live in the middle of nowhere). Will be looking for Shelter and Handsome Devil now.

I Hear the Sunspot, by Yuki Fumino

Kohei Sugihara is a university student who developed significant hearing loss during high school. His experiences have gradually pushed him into social isolation. He finds it difficult to connect with classmates, and he's become accustomed to keeping people at a distance.

Then he meets Taichi Sagawa.

Taichi is practically Kohei's opposite: outgoing, straightforward, energetic, and occasionally rather impulsive. He's also struggling financially and looking for work.

After discovering Kohei's situation, Taichi offers to take notes for him in class in exchange for meals.

What begins as a practical arrangement gradually develops into a genuine friendship, and eventually something more.

The reading order:

  1. I Hear the Sunspot
  2. I Hear the Sunspot: Theory of Happiness
  3. I Hear the Sunspot: Limit (Three volumes)
  4. I Hear the Sunspot: Four Seasons (Three volumes)
