Interesting to see what goes on in Sara's head, toying with the idea of buying Tom's freedom, her concerns with a noticeable change in her mother's behavior. I was surprised with how forthright she was with Matt, asking how desperate he was in conjunction with asking Alice to marry... "I know." He sighed deeply. "I know." And then he leaned his head against Sarah's shoulder. "I don't like to need her. Not literally. I don't want her money or her slaves. But... now that Isaac and George are dead, there's no one to take care of Maggie, no one to do the housework. I know Dante is not a real house slave, but Great Mother, at least Henry can cook. The Abbermills are all awfully nice, but it's not like we're going to stay there forever." Kitt's world has just expanded in a couple of directions, Riverbend, a town/village, showing him something different. Warm, comfortable, and calming, a panacea for the internal turbulence. What remains unspoken is seeping out inadvertently, becoming harder to deny. I still wonder what motivates Kitt's father that his mother is quiescent, without a voice of her own, I find puzzling and troubling... Senior year is racing towards both boys, and decisions about the future are looming. Can...will Kitt and Matt come to terms with what they are, and glide under the radar? College decisions are coming; will Kitt's father insist on the choice of college? Will either boy earn a scholarship? Riverbend reminds me of several small college towns, a place where both could simply exist... Just simply loving this story, it fuels the imagination!!!

And yet to come, the fallout when Camille realizes the burgeoning relationship between her son and Elias...
