Clo is talking about creamed or pureed soups which are less common here in the US.
Marty we mostly prefer what we refer to as hearty soups, something akin to a stew without thickening the broth. Also, remember Americans tend not to have multiple courses to our meals. We don't typically have a starter course. We often treat salads as a side or as the main rather than a separate course. We might have appetizers or separate soup or salad courses is when we dine out but rarely at home.
