Writing Tip Writing Tip: Keeping Your Writing Life In Sync (And Backed Up)
Andy78 commented on Renee Stevens's blog entry in Writing World
This looks like something that I'd find useful as well. I use both my laptop and my main PC for writing and I'm forever e-mailing stuff to myself - it drives me nuts. I don't like using USB flash drives as I've lost a few over the years, but thankfully with nothing important on them. -
As someone who works with cancer on a daily basis, I'm the first to applaud his efforts. However, when you are in a classroom, you are THERE TO LEARN. No matter how smart you are, no matter what other interests you have, you still have to do the assigned classwork. After all, how far is this kid going to get, if he ends up failing his exams because he was more interested in reading about cancer genes than something that will actually be on his exams. When I was in school, I used to find a lot of my classwork boring and too easy, but would never dream of reading something in class that wasn't to do with the assigned work. After all, there was a lot of stuff that came up in my exams that I wouldn't have known if I hadn't paid attention in class.

Story Review Featured Story: Circumnavigation
Andy78 commented on Trebs's blog entry in Gay Authors News
I keep meaning to start reading this one, but it took me six months to read Castaway Hotel. -
Happy Birthday. Hope you have a great day.

You need to read the article in Huff to see why the "hypothetical" is there. This letter was written by the columnist to his as yet unborn son - so the child's sexual orientation naturally isn't known, hence the "hypothetically gay son". This letter was in response to a letter that was on Reddit from a father disowning his son for being gay (I think has already been posted in soapbox, so I won't repost it here). In the UK, the acronym PFLAG works because the organisation's name is stated as Parents, Friends (& family) of Lesbians And Gays - so "family" doesn't warrant its own "F" in the acronym; though bizarrely they have no working relationship, of any description, at all, with PFLAG in the USA.

I haven't read many of Lugh's stories, but I love his anthology entries. He manages to write so much with so few words.

Happy birthday Bill. Have a great day. I did order you a couple of Chippendales unfortunately I must have been misunderstood, because these came instead:

What I find helps is just simply write the chapter. Don't think about what you're writing, just get some ideas down. You may well end up with 2000 words of complete rubbish, but you should find a few hundred words that are worth keeping and will form the basis of the chapter.

Writing Tip Writing Tip: How To Be Critical, Not Cutting
Andy78 commented on Trebs's blog entry in Writing World
Andrew - are you saying you wish me to give you a few hard kicks in the chuckies? Because I'd happily oblige Trust me, if you wrote anything dumb I'd tell you What I'm saying is, if I suggest a certain euphemism or synonym is avoided for a particular reason, but the author elects to use it anyway, then that is the author's prerogative. These are things which are subjective and individual, and therefore has to be left down to the author's personal style. The same thing holds true with suggestions to changes in dialogue or text. However, I would continue to highlight things like spelling, grammar and continuity problems, as these are things which should always be corrected before submitting. **goes back to editing chapter 10 of J&K now armed with his special extra-large red marker pen (with at least four refills)** -
It would be GREAT to see you there Lily if you can make it **crawls back into its hole and dies**

Writing Tip Writing Tip: How To Be Critical, Not Cutting
Andy78 commented on Trebs's blog entry in Writing World
Although I've done some editing on site, and I love editing J&K for Andrew, I mainly do editing and proofreading for friends who are submitting dissertations for their degrees. It's very different editing a story and editing a dissertation. With my friend's dissertations I'm far more critical and use lots and lots of the red ink, and have on occasion had to resort to giving a good hard kick in the chuckies with my size tens With editing for stories, as NNN has said, if a previous suggestion hasn't been acted upon I'll let it slide in future - unless there is a very good reason for it not to. With dissertations I've edited however, I'll continuously beat people over the head until they are reduced to tears and submit to my demands The one thing that Cia has said that I agree with more than anything, is that at the end of the day the story belongs to the author. -
It would be to see you there Lily if you can make it

Hope you have a truly great day Cia and that get everything you wish for Happy birthday

My GP practice has two GPs (a man and a woman), makes no difference to me which one I see. I just see the one who has the shorter waiting list. If I had to have surgery my local hospitals are very much male dominated. Last year a friend of mine needed to see a breast specialist (nothing serious, just wanted to check if she needed any screening because of her family history), but because she insisted on seeing a female doctor she had to travel across London and waited nearly three months for an appointment. I actually know most of our local consultants (since many of the children in the hospital I work in are referred to them), and I wouldn't have a problem seeing any of them. I think if I ever had to have anything major done, I'd probably be more worried about dying than whether the doctor's reproductive organs were on the inside or the outside.

If I'm out for the evening with friends then my drink of choice is Jack Daniels and coke which I can drink all night long without worrying about getting too drunk - I just get nicely drunk. When I am with my Scottish relatives we'll usually break out the single malt whisky. I'm particularly fond of a highland single malt called Glen Ord. The 12 year old is really nice and only costs around £35 for a 700 ml bottle. This year on Burns Night though we went really insane and clubbed together to buy a bottle of the 30 year old, which at £200 for 700ml bottle was a once in a lifetime treat. I'm also not adverse to trying some of the local poisons when I'm abroad. I tried slivovice in Prague but never again (for slivovice read "highly toxic drink which could be used to power the space shuttle" - I kid you not), I tried ouzo when I was in Rhodes last year and really liked it (but then I love aniseed) and I tried many different rums on a Caribbean cruise a few years ago. About the only drink I really avoid is white wine, I just get too giggly on it. I've also never been a huge fan of vodka, just doesn't really seem to have any taste or oomph to it. But I'm up for trying anything once, or sometimes twice just to make sure. Please drink responsibly .

Well this is our best performance in the Olympics since 1908 (when we won 56 gold, 51 silver and 39 bronze) and we actually hosted the games. Perhaps we should host more often ? Tom Daley was actually very unlucky in the diving. He was in gold medal place going into the last dive (a lead of only 0.1 points), but his last dive just didn't have enough difficulty (only 3.3, compared to 3.6 that Boudia and Qui Bo had). It's not as though third and fourth was very close (he beat Minibaev of Russia by 29 points) and was only 9.9 points off the silver medal. An outstanding performance for an 18 year old.

Wow Cia. That is great news It must have come as a shock to you though. I wonder if she has ever left a review on any of your stories
-
I like Baileys. But would that be plain, coffee, mint chocolate, toffee, hazelnut or biscotti? Or, like me, is just whatever bottle happens to be closest?
-
Trebs hath been at the sherry again methinks Andrew

Tom Daley wins bronze in diving. Congrats to David Boudia on winning the gold. And I loved in the inadvertent double entendre during the commentary, when they said that David Boudia topped Tom Daley **wonders how many other people have wanted to that**
