  1. Find an animal rescue/adoption group and help with their adoption fairs. You'll meet a lot of people from all walks of life, with at least one shared interest, animals. Beyond that, I'm doing the same thing trying to rebuild the friend network. I made the effort to talk to and make friends with one person in one of my classes. Our schedules rarely match, but we get together once a month.
  2. I'm sure your child is precious to you. All parents think their child is precious. I know your child is excited about his Christmas presents and wants to show our son. Our son is excited about his as well, and wants to spend his Christmas vacation playing Xbox One with his dad. You know the one who works 12 hour shifts and only gets to spend a day with our boy every other week? We understand your son loves your pets. We love ours too, and consider her part of the family. She protects us, loves us and is excited to see us when we return home. We don't bring her down to your home to bang on your door or do her business in your yard. Please help your son understand coming down once to see if our son wants to play is acceptable. Coming down every hour, is excessive and intrusive. Bringing toys down to bang on the door is upsetting, to the two legged and four legged residents. Please have your son keep his toys and pets at home. ok, rant over, you may resume your regular reading......
  3. I have a soft spot for Stille Nacht (Silent Night in German). When visiting family or our mom in the hospital, the radio reception could be sketchy in the mountains, before CDs and MP3. Dad would sing a line in German and my brother and I would echo back the English line. Wonderful memory. Beyond my favorites include Little Drummer Boy, Old Toy Trains, Emmanuel (haunting tune) and Walking in a Winter Wonderland. I despise the comedic version of Jingle Bells. I don't like Grandma got run over by a Reindeer, Santa Baby and most of the songs that play up the commercial/greedy part of the seasons.
  4. For me it's about connections. Through traditions old and new, the holidays connects me to generations gone. Spending time with friends and family, at dinners, gift exchanges, parties or just hanging out connects me with those I care about. And sharing the traditions of my family and husband's with our boy, as well as those traditions unique to our family, we connect with the future.
  5. Happy Birthday
  6. Happy birthday!!!!
  7. Unless I'm not seeing right, that's two guys kissing Santa. We need to find this form of mistletoe!
  8. It scares me because I wonder if doctors will have more incentive to suggest hysterectomies, and uterus donation, for non-cancerous conditions without trying less radical but potentially effective treatments. Also I worry about the potential black market for this.
  9. Happy Birthday Mikie
  10. Where would the donor uterus come from? This idea scares me.
  11. Happy Birthday!
  12. Honestly, see another doctor, try another medicine. There are so many anti-depressants and such out there, there is bound to be one that works better. I thought about answering your questions in depth, but I think it would hurt more than help. I've been dealing with depression since I was 9 or 10, I diagnosed at 22. How long I'm depressed depends on when I seek treatment, the earlier I ask for medication the faster the symptoms disappear. I have tried suicide once, and thought of it a few times. I don't cut or hurt myself on purpose. I've tried therapy, and medications. At times the depression has affected relationships. By accident my doctor and I found the right anti-depressant for me when prescribing a low dose anti-depressant to counter the side effect of another medicine I had to take. Just like there are many types of antidepressants, there are many types of therapy. I would suggest talking to another doctor to try other anti-depressants, and also finding a different therapist. One other thing that jumps out at me is using caffeine to keep calm. Usually caffeine is a stimulant, but if it calms you, you should get evaluated for attention deficit disorder.
  13. Do you think that there is something wrong with LGBTQ people? I don't. I won't even use the doctor's form "variation of normal", whatever your sexuality is that is normal for you. So how can you fix what isn't broken? It's possible to brainwash people into believing or doing things that are against their nature. I think that is all conversion therapy is, brainwashing. My two cents as a straight mother.
  14. He has to write some words to personify the object. List of objects: hands on clock, blank page, armchair, cool breeze, and autumn leaves... Any examples to kinda give us an ideas? If it helps, my great nephew is 8-10.
  15. Happy Birthday
  16. Happy birthday Cynus!
  17. Death sucks, even more so when the person who died could have done more to prevent it. I've been dealing with this myself for most of this year. If you need to know you aren't alone, and what you're feeling is ok, read my blogs - particularly the comments people left. Many people have offered support and great advice. Take the time you need to grieve, and know I'm thinking of you.
  18. Happy Belated Birthday
  19. *hugs*
  20. Gudgeonville Bridge and Devil's Backbone/Oxbow The Gudgeonville Covered Bridge had always been a popular place to visit because of superstition that surrounds the bridge. Locals believed that the bridge was haunted. A sheer cliff made of shale, nicknamed the "Ox's Bow," flanked the bridge. Many people erroneously believe this cliff to be called the Devil's Backbone, but that is actually a two sided cliff some miles away. Unexplained screams in the middle of the night from the surrounding woods was said to be the result of children who have fallen from the cliff to their deaths. Another unexplained phenomenon was the sound of hooves on wood and occasional braying coming from the bridge. One story is that a mule was beaten to death on the bridge by its drunken owner because it refused to cross the bridge. Another story involves the mule having a heart attack from being spooked by a calliope playing on a barge going down on the nearby canal. (This second one is not possible, as the canal was gone before the bridge was built) The story as I was told: Obidiah Mills, a farmer, had taken his mule to town to sell his crop. Got drunk and was stumbling back home after midnight. His mule balked and refused to cross the bridge. Mr. Mills picked up a stick and beat the animal trying to force it across, and beat the poor creature to death. The stories differ on the time that passed, some say the next market day, others the next year. After a rainy trip to town, Mr. Mills started home when the rain cleared at midnight. He was found dead on the road before the bridge, covered in mule hoof prints, but there were no hoof prints in the mud around Mr Mills.
  21. Every community has them, scary or spooky stories, about a place, or a character who lived there. Let's share our local legends....
  22. Remember, my son is 15, not a tween. However, I think he has a crush on Riley
  23. Hmm, I don't know if it's weird, but my son and I watch it too.
  24. There are as many reasons to cut off or limit contact between family members as there are family members. No one should judge someone who has had to make that difficult decision. My siblings and I were estranged from our mom when she died in an mental-illness assisted living center. When we came in to go through her belongings to dispose of medicines, get necessary records and such, the center staff was rude and made it quite plain what they thought of the fact that we had never visited. However, they only knew her medicated and under control, they never had to deal with her episodes. If you make the decision to be estranged from a parent, don't regret it. It's a painful and hard one to make, but it is the right one for you at the time you make it.
