  1. The constable is a nasty piece of work. If I were him, I wouldn't order drinks in public places. He's the kind poisons are made for. If he went down a dark alley, he'd look like an overused pincushion. Oh, Lothar is going to be so busy.

    Epilogue

You have to keep in mind the author wrote everything except the epilogue when he was a teenager. He wanted to finish it now and the rest hasn't been edited or revised. I think it's perfectly fine on that basis. There might be lingering questions, but I'm satisfied.

    Epilogue

I didn't see this as strange at all. Rebellion is what teens do. The goth part is to irritate his father. Bullies often create children who are bullies. Patrick has likely become big enough he can't be bullied by his father anymore. This is my impression anyway.
  4. Flatten can mean to completely defeat. It can also mean to remove or reduce the shine from a surface.
  5. The name comes from the French liqueur made by the monks at their monastery, Grande Chartreuse in the Chartreuse Mountains. The formula is secret with 130 ingredients.
  6. You know you're in deep trouble when flowers talk and up is down. The violets and I were discussing this the other day.
  7. I wonder if the impulse to burn is where the char part comes in?
  8. Traffickers exist only because buyers exist!! And there are plenty of markets and uses for their cargo. Not much is being done to stop it either.
  9. When they scream and collapse, probably nothing good. It wasn't a roller coaster.
  10. I had forgotten Prague being mentioned.
  11. I have long suspected this was a dystopian tale of our future Earth, though it's difficult to tell where it's set.
  12. As I feared, this didn't go well. Didn't expect it to affect both of them though.
  13. It is a nasty and lingering way to go with patients taking as long as six months to die. Pain is chronic and practically untreatable.
  14. The only cure is a transplant and those who have the condition due to addiction or continuing poor lifestyle choices have no chance on the donor list. Unfortunately, this creates a ghastly market for human traffickers.
  15. I'm sorry the boy met such an undeserved fate. However, his father knew Lonklam was a monster and dealt with him anyway. He is a flesh peddler of the worst sort. It's impossible to conceive any of the poor wretches under his control serviced a creature as loathsome as Lonklam willingly. When you consort with the Devil, you deserve all the pain and damnation which comes your way.

    Chapter 10

    Holy crap indeed.
  17. Why do I have the feeling we're about to see something you only see right after someone yells, "Watch this?" I mean Olona just read what happens when a photonova gland is removed. How is shutting it off much different?
  18. I agree, but Unadi is a male. Ilya is always picking up strays. This is almost a repeat of Ninyani. See something odd in the distance, go to investigate, find someone in distress, and try to help.
  19. Those paddles were lightweight with a striking surface made of parchment or stretched gut. It wouldn't make much of a weapon.
  20. This encounter reminded me of a line from Lynyrd Skynrd's That Smell, "The smell of death's around you." https://youtu.be/J4j7ggZqbiU
  21. Unadi's power is similar to Tahari's except he can't turn it off. As always, Ilya's first instinct is to help. Sucking the life out of everything around you would literally and figuratively suck. Eating, gathering, or growing fresh foods would be a huge challenge. It's a wonder he hasn't gone mad and imagined himself the physical incarnation of the Angel of Death.
  22. Battledore has a number of meanings. It can be a tool used to beat c lothes while washing them, a tool to flatten to bottom of glass vessels during making, or a long handled paddle to remove bread from an oven.

    Chapter 24 S1

This isn't to diminish the poverty of the individuals on the res. Hopefully, the leaders can manage the revenues well to improve life there in the future.
  24. Kosephaji has some severe confidence issues. Where would he be without the support of his two friends? Duna lets the cat out of the bag on their stowaway and it wasn't a surprise to Ogomo. He didn't need his Shift Seer to know there was another. I hope we learn Ogomo's backstory. How he became captain of this ship is no doubt a great story on its own.
  25. With the loose way some pronounce words, one might wonder why they're talking about bacon.
