We worked on it together until he got sick. Then, though I had his permission to continue on without him, I had the hardest time doing so. I'm glad you are enjoying this short visit with our friends. There is one more chapter, and I hope you like it.
@Headstall Thank you, Gary. These people are becoming friends in spite of the tensions that seem to run as seams through the experience. The landscape there is amazing, and well worth a visit someday. Glad that even this unfamiliar group brings you a smile.
The ghosts will always be there, but perhaps they can be made to fade, or be rendered less harmful. I love the phrase you conjured up - army of friendship - I wish for such an army in the world; a huge one to push back the hordes of hate into the swamps where they belong.
Wow, do I agree with this post! You have no obligation to model 'right' behavior. Unprotected sex isn't morally wrong unless you know you're going to hurt someone else by engaging in it. It's pretty foolish, and most people take precautions. But it's what makes sense to the actual characters that matters. It is a story, after all. Post a warning, if that makes a difference to your readers, but honestly, everyone ought to be able to see it's fiction.
I hope you are enjoying this short encounter. And if you'd like, you can Google Letchworth State Park (it's a real place) to see what the setting is like. Thanks for finding this little story, and for taking time to comment.
Thanks for that lovely compliment - that you should want more. There is one more chapter, at least. This was very difficult writing, trying to give voice to Skinny's characters as he would have done. Thanks for reading!
David and Andy are seen here in a new time, and in better places for each than before. Yet that doesn't mean they aren't still beset by their hurts. It is interesting to see them wary of one another, testing out the possibility of friendship. Thanks for reading and for your comments.
It's really nice to be allowed this short visit. I am glad Skinny helped to make it happen. And there is one more chapter... thanks so much for reading this.
Zander stood. "You guys want to go for a walk, maybe? Stretch out?"
Twoey got up. "Can't go far. They'll be here any minute."
"You think so? I figure we have ten, fifteen minutes, at least."
"Not the way David runs," Twoey said, and I had to laugh. Knowing David, Twoey could have been right.
"Come on," I said, "we have a minute or two." Mel rose.
"Hey, we're going to stretch for a few. You coming with?" she called over to Terry and Andy.
"Sure thing,"
There is beauty in this dance we chose,
for without each, we are neither...
These two lines are as beautiful as any poetry written, as loving as any vow. These alone amazing, yet I was already swept on the tide of craving and yearning and trust you created. Truly wonderful, tim.
Finally, Eric has a tiny bit of stability in his life. He eats. He works. And for once there is an older parent sort of figure he can respect. And he is very concerned about Ambrose Whitley. However, Toby seems like a nice guy, doesn't he? Thank you for picking up this story a second (or third) time, and even more for your very kind and generous comment.
Thank you, tim. You and I know the songs of traffic. And you never quite know what creatures will appear from the morning mist - sometimes, I think it is like an enchantment. I am very glad you liked these.
Glad you liked that mixture of imagery and sensory appeals. Somehow, I figured you might like Dawn Encounter. Thank you for reading, and for letting these steep in your mind.
Dawn Encounter was quite unexpected and powerful in reality. But there are other encounters - with rabbits, killdeer, raccoons, owls, even. And once, memorably, with a skunk. All quite wonderful.
Road Music
Highway
noises echo
down dark morning's valley,
braking eighteen wheelers sing of
lost things;
harried,
sleepy-eyed, coffee starved pickups
play high C's on concrete,
but can't drown out
the stars.
Dawn Encounter
Standing
tense in the mist,
the tall buck tests the air,
waiting for the blood-red scent of
danger;
subtle
eddies shift and dance around him,
bearing evil rumors
to frighten and
dismay.
Happy Birthday, cheerful wishes,
that you're served the finest dishes,
though your stomach well might ache
if you have that slice of cake.
Happy Birthday!
