I am glad you liked the last two lines. They went through several transformations to arrive at that form. Did the 'conversation' work for you? It wasn't clear if it would be distracting or not. The war and conflict you discern were in my mind, but could take a great many forms. And the old man is left with his memories, regrets, and perhaps, hopes. Thank you!
Thank you, Moggy. I can't help thinking that you're right in that this will need to seep into the mind for more consideration. You are very good to comment on this.
Twilight
Weep, old man, for chances lost Oh, I'm fine...
all life's ugly details glossed,
and rest upon a broken down settee,
yet melancholy tunes won't set you free.
Mourn, old man, go on and pine
...those were days...
for the long past days that shine;
beneath the grey unbroken cloud one might
recall sweet moments in the fading light.
Cry, old man, your eyes upraise,
..
Thank you for reading this story to its end. Your comments mean a great deal to me; they are enormously encouraging. But Andy now is safe and happy; Zander has Andy, and they can grow into each other day by day in love. And that's as it should be. Thanks again.
There are some things about a bygone time that don't bear too much recollection. A hot Jared tongue bath is one thing, but blue balls under any circumstances is another. Scott's 21 night certainly opens up plenty more of the things he missed out on. The bar and the party surely showed that - he has had one night to be more of himself. Yet has he really been truly who he wanted to be, or something he was told to be? One needn't be a party animal to be wholly oneself, after all. This is an interesting trip down memory lane.
Thank you, Gary. I guess it's one of those moments when the facts you see suggest a number of possible stories. Who knows what was really going on? I still wonder.
Everything is gone, except his laptop. Phone, capital, goods, everything that made his predatory existence possible. A shower might have been good - but with the bathroom reeking and trashed, and then the shock of the video - flight seemed like the option to take.
I am glad you thought this vivid. I could smell the place even as I wrote. Thank you for reading and responding to this.
You grasped the meaning of 'sick' that I had in mind. The last party goer, probably high, bemused by this party favor, takes the opportunity presented to him. Then, whether it was ordered or random chance, he frees the now thoroughly raped predator. If this scene failed to cause confused emotions in readers, then I failed utterly. Because you're right: even damaged, hurt, degraded...this is one dangerous person.
I want to like this, but also to cry. Stefan is in the middle of getting raped by a man he no longer wants to love. Devan is fighting a hard, long slog of a battle with his relatives just to become a human being in their eyes. I cannot tell if there is any hope for either of them, let alone the other characters of our acquaintance. The trouble is, I can't just put this away, as it is convincingly written and utterly engaging.
You continue to make very good observations. What a pity for the predator (now caged) that he was not as observant as you. Thanks for reading and for your great comments and thoughts.
Excellent questions. Your observations are acute. As for brutality, there are degrees and types of this - the predator may have had a different course in mind, but maybe one no less brutal. Thanks for reading this story.
Your description of day 1 is enlightening and a little scary. The mind will overload and overwork itself looking for hurts and sickness. We learn more, see more in this mirror held up to Jake's life. Great writing.
Several images, some very mathematical, come to mind as I re-read this poem. It is the chance and the choice to look at things from a different angle or different dimension that get to me. What matters most is that you can see outside and beyond the boundaries of misery to something other, something better. Hugs.
I love this poem, plain and simple. It describes so much of what circulates in my brain and blood. There is no emoticon for the soul's resonant ping of recognition. But if there were, I'd use it here.
For a moment, I thought Liz or some other potent power was going to send Caleb off to the underworld right away. So many risks the rash Caleb would undertake: an unknown land, with an unknown metaphysics, and no way of knowing if Ethan would return with him, even he had the will. Great chapter!
