Headstall's Reflections - 83. Chapter 83 My Hands

It's been a while since I've wanted to share some poetry...

                                                                                                                                                          ***

My Hands

Bare knuckles have sunk into the flesh of creeps

Informing them there is no pushover here

Yet my fingertips have grazed the skin of angels

Eliciting responses still swirling in a timely fog

Sinews and veins stand out as proof of a lifetime

Satisfying my need to create with deft strokes

Whether on canvas, in the earth, or under a horse

Strength gained from hammering steel into shoes

These hands have built for me, a world of my own

They have shown my heart in their caresses

And my determination in besting challenges

All while punctuating the things I have to say

My hands, they are all these things and more

And even today they are scraped from honest toil

But no longer appear as the hands of my youth

For what I see now are the hands of an old man

Tracing the ridged scar running from thumb to wrist

I try to flex the finger that doesn’t bend as it should

Noticing how crinkled skin depicts a roadmap to nowhere

But I still see all the places they’ve been… I see my life in them….

Sometimes I look at my hands and notice the same thing.  Years of manual labor were not kind to them, and my skin is definitely not as smooth as it used to be.  Great job.

That roadmap depicted in wrinkled skin is a map of the journey thus far not the journey that yet lies ahead ...

Thanks, bro.

That last stanza really got to me. Suddenly, we become an accumulation of things that don't work as they ought to. But the roadmap to nowhere charting where we've been is a wonderful metaphor. Thanks very much for this.

I'm just amazed at the insights you give us in even the most prosaic things...hands?  How often do we take a conscious look at them unless we've injured one somehow?

Mine remain relatively the same as in years past though the joints may ache some and there's a scar at the base of my thumb on the left one near the base that resulted in the loss of some feeling in that digit above that point; blame it on the lid of a discarded cat food tin when I went to push the trash down a bit to slip one last item in....

Despite current limitations on other parts of my sensory apparatus, the hands still provide me with good feelings and the means to communicate my thought to others on the internet, so I'm content with them for now.  :)

Hey, buddy. I am content too... in fact I sometimes marvel at my old hands. I wish they didn't ache, but they are still capable of so much. Wonderful to hear from you, dear friend. Cheers... Gary.... xoxoxoxo
