  1. This is going to mean some serious reading. As I've only got one pair of eyes, who's going to have the honour of being read first? Now there's a question ...

    Story

Horror is not a fiction category found much on GA, and this is definitely horror, even if virtually all of it is the result of someone's imagination. Effective, chilling and the sharp turn the story took towards the end was a relief to this reader.

    Broken

Our anti-hero wants to 'live life as a proud gay man, whatever the hell that meant'... He knows the phrase but has no concept of what being proud and gay should mean. To my mind, it means the complete antithesis of his behaviour. We get his back story but it doesn't really change my view of him - yes, he's effectively homeless and pretty much without money but my response is that he's brought much of it upon himself. Not that I approve in anyway of what's been done to him, but still ...

    Man flu

Based on recent events, presumably? It made me smile and laugh and really brightened up my Monday morning. Thanks!
  5. AC, it's not continuous - it's made up of about 14 pieces. None should be more than 5 minutes in length? I wouldn't dream of expecting anybody to sit through a solid hour of viols if they;re not used to it.
  6. I'm currently listening to Handel's Theodora - wonderful salve after a day's work. Here's a sample - a gorgeous duet To thee, thou glorious son https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eXi0HuZiGc
  7. @ Aditus I have a soft spot for Carmina burana although I'm not at all keen on its composer as a person. I also quite enjoy his second work of the trilogy, Catulli carmina - rather more of an acquired taste but quirky and interesting. This is the first part.

    Escape

I'm glad I wasn't eating anything when I read this - you convey the stench, mess and general squalor far too well ... Our anti-hero has at least some self-realisation, even some insight into his previous behaviour. Will it come to anything?

    Sorrows

A for your most recent sadness and another for the memories it has brought back to haunt you.
  10. I'm considering taking the decision to become an author and I can feel this blog reaching out a finger and pointing it straight at me. A question: my 'reputation' is far beyond what is needed to avoid automatic moderation - does this mean that although I'd be a first time author, my story wouldn't be moderated?
  11. That is much more my cup of tea - I'm pretty much in the anti-Wagner camp: the idea of being forced to listen to the Ring would be something I'd do almost anything to avoid.

    Chapter 49

Tim, I'm pleased that the unhappiness you chronicled elsewhere has passed and you're both back in sunnier, calmer times.

    The Epicure

Wow! This was so different from what I normally read here and it was so good. A food writer and a law enforcement officer - not your average literary pairing but it worked very well and I was interested in both of them and their lives. How they worked together was funny and sometimes touching. Very enjoyable.

    Broken

Strange sort of good Samaritan who fucks the object of his pity before doing his good deed. But, our anti-hero should be grateful for small mercies, I suppose. A dark and disturbing look at the underbelly of university life.

    Suitability

Something is wrong here - I understood every word ... And such beautiful words, fashioned with such skill and love. A hymn in praise of the natural world and your beloved. A fitting poem for your half century.

    Story

Given you're still being described as the 'Santa slayer', my curiosity demanded that I read this. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The ending was unexpected but like Puppi, it made me laugh. Visions of a renegade 007 making a successful hit - wonderful! Bet most people are still expecting their presents to be delivered for Christmas, though. Really good.
  17. I've been cutting my writing teeth, you've rediscovered your muse ... and I know Parker's found it light relief. All from one episode I trailed in front of you guys. I'm very happy to be any part of getting you back to writing and I will look out with interest for what results.
  18. Short but beautifully written. An honest, unsparing look at the final death of a relationship - accepted by one but not the other. Your way of making the characters dissect the corpse was wonderful.

    Caged

I must admit that this chapter left me feeling somewhat queasy. Is revenge ever justified? The actions or intentions of both main characters so far are equally reprehensible and make me dislike them to the same degree. As you say, not an easy read.
  20. I use them sometimes to get a flavour of a particular author - then I can move onto something more substantial. To see the anthology listings go to Stories and then click on the Categories side bar and you can see the listings and the live links to each anthology.
  21. Of course, you couldn't resist a prompt about a police officer, could you? Wonderful! Slipped down a treat.

    Chapter 1

I was looking for something to read and came across this - Christmas in theory but just the title suggested that it could be something different in practice. And so it is. Abuse of power, being a stranger in a very different foreign land - these are the backdrop for a love story that develops despite everything else. That final decision? Brave, foolhardy, deluded? My thoughts were I hope he knows what he's letting himself in for ... Good involving stuff.

    Trapped

The quite spare and unadorned language somehow better conveys the sense of threat and menace. Less is more. This also applies to the amount of information given out - a tight focus leaves me wondering about a number of things. Next week can't come soon enough!
  24. Thanks for your kind reviews, both. Val, next up in my LPW writing will hopefully be Drewcula oh, and your ninjas
  25. Thank you both for your kind words. Parker knows how unsure I've been about my first attempts at a prompt ... Oh well - next up, number 1 perhaps?
