  1. Coming Home from Christmas Bill simply couldn’t be bothered with the hassle involved in putting the car into the garage – not tonight, so he simply parked it on the drive before getting out and going round to the boot to extract his suitcase. He walked to the front door, put the case down on the step and inserted his key in the front door. There was a definite sense of relief as he did so, but it was tinged with other thoughts. It had certainly been a trying day. The first trial

    Chapter 1

If there are any other Darvils around after CG has got his...........me please! As CG has said, I'd already had the pleasure of reading this elsewhere. I think it is a fantastic tale - full of imagination and invention. I can never think of Amsterdam (or even Edinburgh) in the same way from now on.

    Chapter 1

Didn't know anything about the Hardy Boys - maybe they never made it across the pond. However, that didn't detract from my enjoyment of this story that moved along at a rapid and, at times, very tense pace but also with an amazing amount of detail. Indeed it is a magical story!

    Questions

Especially 'well done' with the Kevin section. That was a bit tough to read, even tougher to write I'm sure, but far, far, tougher to have been raised in such a way. Am sure the anniversary is going to hold some exciting surprises for Mikey.

I'd be careful of that stuff. I've heard it can make you Grumpy. ... Happy. ... Sleepy. ... Dopey. ... Bashful. ... Sneezy and then you end up having to see the Doc

Am sure he will 'cos he wouldn't want to see Mikey pricking himself

I wanna see more of Finn That boy deserves a hickey of his own! Good to see Mikey giving back some of what he has received. Mind you, I suspect he's going to need Jay's help threading his needle in that class but that's great justification for them getting real close........

I agree with mayday and Daveh. Look forward to the next chapter.
  11. Some memories are like wine and improve with time; others unfortunately can be more like milk. A good wine deserves to be shared with friends; sour milk is only for the drain. Appreciate the comments Geron, but I don't see this as any more than a stand alone story. Ivor.
  12. LOL. Was it plimsolls or sandals for you? Glad it brought back some memories and thanks for commenting.
  13. Sorry it brought tears as it wasn't intended to be a sad story, just a look back to past, simpler, times. Thanks for the comments bubby - appreciated.
  14. Thanks CG! Perhaps because that was when I grew up I am able to convey a feeling of life at that time. To make it clear though, Alan is not me. :-)
  15. This was indeed set in the 50s when Britain was a grey, cold, place. Still recovering from the war and still with rationing. Very different to the US. Which is not to say that kids weren't happy - they didn't know anything else and made their own amusements spending a lot of time outside. The changes came about in the 60s when more money was around and the US influence grew. Am glad you liked this little glimpse of and 'unknown time'. Thanks for commenting
  16. The School Trip I’d brought the note home from school and given it to Mum like I always did. I wasn’t worried when I gave it her ‘cos I knew I’d not done anything bad at school so I didn’t have to worry she’d get angry when she read it. Teacher had told us what it was about anyway – she were organising a trip for my form and the other one of the same year. It were getting near the end of the school year and this year was the last one we was all going to be there. We’d done the 11+ ex

  18. Chris & Steve are learning lots about themselves and their new 'profession' and surely couldn't find a better teacher than Debbi. Come to that I'm learning lots of things too - as Droughtquake says, there are so many delicious little gold nuggets sprinkled throughout the story. At the end I was left with a smile on my face, rather like Dumbo, although I wasn't sprinkling water at the time. A cannon and a flying saucer? Bring 'em on, Geron!

Thanks CG. There are always plenty of cats out there that need a good home and the same applies to dogs of course. What you did with Kublai was well rewarded.

Seems I can't reply to individual comments these days, so thank to droughtquake, northie and Geron for their appreciation of this story. There was an element of fact in that 'Fang' did exist and was found living under a portakabin, but a large part of the rest was fiction.

Guess I’d been pretty lucky to land what looked like a fairly decent job straight from Uni. I’d graduated from Nottingham in the summer with a BSc in Accountancy and managed to find a job with a firm of Accountants in a small town in the Midlands. I knew quite a few of my contemporaries hadn’t been so lucky and were either still looking for work or had resorted to taking on something they didn’t really want to do. Perhaps the fact that I’d managed a decent degree had helped – maybe in the end, a

    Chapter 1

Thanks, Wenmale! Am pleased to hear you liked this story. Wayne' journey was rather tougher than the one faced by Geron's characters, but they all came through it. Must confess I do like happy endings too.
  25. This story had definite lift off :-)
