And seven years later this tale, like a good wine, matures well. I don’t agree with the comment about throwing eight years away because as you put so beautifully, he wants to forget these years UNTIL the memories don’t hurt. Im a mega fan of the GA grand sagas, especially from Carlos H, Mark A etc., but exploring your list is resonating at a deep level. Thank you. Xx -

I thought the story was a bit off the beaten track, as it were, and then read the linked article which I found fascinating. It’s a v good portrayal of the worst combination: grief and guilt (real or assumed). but the truly great thing about this new installment is that I found all the others written back in 2017…. They are so good. Congratulations, it is a real skill to tell a complete story in 1500 or fewer words. Great stuff, @Mikiesboy -

I can understand the frustration of Sammy. Years ago I was a volunteer with a “suicide helpline” and just trying to make/keep a connection going was so demanding. Debriefing was a must. I remember a colleague had a “silent caller”. For 25 min she keep the link going even though not a word was said by him until she said she had to go and just asked him to say goodnight. He did and hung up. I too would like more but very often it’s just one call and one hopes the person gains strength. This is a v good story bringing back many memories. Thank you.🙏

I think the real skill which the author has in spades is that all of his characters are growing and developing and that such growth is intertwined in each other’s change. That plus a warm, story-telling style makes this perfect reading on a lazy Saturday morning. Please continue for dozens of chps!

I think you mean William IV. William the third was a 17th Prince of Orange who became part of the William and Mary joint rulers in 1688 after the “papist” James II fled. Perhaps Mark could start a third series based on those days and another long, drawn-out war in Europe????

As an avid Arbour reader I found Gap Year to be a great addition to Mark’s large collection of books. For me this volume is up there with the incredible Black Widow in this series and Northern Exposure in the Bridgemont series. What this says to me is that after more than a decade of writing, the author’s story-telling just gets better and better. For fans and followers of master Will since he first appeared as a fiery youngster making his dads’ lives hell, here you will be in heaven. For those not so enamoured, there is so much for you to grind and gnash your teeth. As ever, the writing is excellent, the author’s imagination continues to amaze one, and for Will, once the Gap Year is over, university awaits. And so do Mark’s readers, avidly. Bravo

Volume 18 of the series kicks off a few months after the climax of Gap Year. All the Arbour strengths are already at play: strong characterisations, tortuously complex relationships, and compelling storylines. Another hit in the making.

Perfectly said. I feared we were in for a dry patch, understandably… So Will, Brad and JJ are the narrators this should make the sparks fly! Fasten your seatbelts ladies and gentlemen, we are expecting some heavy turbulence, an electric storm or two and high winds during the flight….

Unbelievable that Mark has got the ninth volume of Bridgemont already “en marcha” as the Spanish say. I’ve been following him for six or seven yrs but many loyal GA readers have been with him since 2011(?). I hope Mark realizes just how must pleasure he has brought so many readers. Thank you. 😊

This story is like a lemon syllabub, nice, light and airy but with the sharp touch of lemon and the kick from the booze mixed in. Good, fun story with insightful lines coming out of the contestants mouths. Roll on round three!

Well, well, well look who is back…… and so soon. With Northern Exposure and Gap Year both finished I feared we were in for a lean time after the year of plenty you gave us in 2023. I can’t wait to see how this develops. I’m intrigued about Caroline but I think she is a well-needed character of too much importance to not appear. So many thanks indeed, Mark. This installment and all it promises have made my day!

Totally agree with @akascrubber whose prose is way better than mine! Over sick leave and long Xmas travels I reread a large number of GA stories and as you say, Mark is up there with the very best. 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
