At Tempton Joel tried to stay invisible so it's safe to say he never got into any confrontations over there. This might be a new experience that he doesn't know how to navigate yet of when to show discretion in these kind of situations (Drinking 6 beers isn't a way to do that). While I think Joel is getting some respect he will also attract some dumb ass macho types.

Absolutely good points but it still doesn't override that Rick interacted with all three. Just spitballing here but you mention there were no murders when Rick was at the Academy. Where was the Academy located? Maybe the person who Rick is noticing never saw Rick during that time.He started seeing Rick again when Rick got his current assignment
