I really liked this twist! Earlier it looked as though Theodore had betrayed and killed his own pack, but now we realise he was actually trying to save them from something far worse and preserve them for the possibility of resurrection. It completely changed how I saw that earlier scene. It’s a good reminder that things are not always as they first appear, and that some of the strongest characters only reveal their true nature as the story unfolds. Lovely writing Mrs Fox!

That was quite a scare. Certainly an attempt to kill Lawrence. I’m starting to warm a little to Anton, who I think is the Chief of Security for the Sun King. I might be wrong. What was Ali doing away from the group?

Quite a bizarre experience without supervision from the professors. So perhaps this is a student-led initiation ritual. Of course, administrators will likely wish to know how the transfer student managed. I wonder if Reichenau and Becker are past students themselves? So Bastien and Lawrence are a little more public. I’m beginning to think that his Dark Eminence is not the bad guy. 🦹

That was hot. They certainly are taken with each other. Now was Bastien’s initiation of the murder a ploy or a sad young man confiding in someone who he likes and appears to trust?

Agreed @LeeSA. Did lukas stitch his journal into the mattress? If so why? Was he aware of his impending death? If it was somebody else, why hide it in plain sight, rather than keep or destroy it? Too many questions around this journal.

Anton’s whispered comment “You’re being watched”, is an interesting moment in the torture of Lawrence. Was it a genuine warning? Are we perhaps wrong about Anton? Was it a malicious warning from an opponent? This for me was the most interesting point of the chapter. What could it mean?

It was quite telling that Lawrence did not cover up when bastion came in. I’m sure that on some level he was letting Bastien have a good eye full, and it sounds like it was plenty! As you have already said @Laura S. Fox, there will be another murder, an Agatha Christie country house murder. I hope Bastien is real and the same goes for Ali. The rest all seem like sycophants and arseholes frankly.

A great read once again. Granger is in top form, just as we have come to know him. I wonder if the nicely built Herrera will get to know Granger a little better on this trip. Happy 4th of July to all the Americans here.

Agreed. For all we know at this point, Bastien may well be a murderer disguised as a hopeless romantic, while Anton, the Dark Eminance, may well end up being heroic! This is definitely an Agatha Christie novel grafted to a German operetta! -
I had the exact impression @Summerabbacat. My first thought upon hearing the name was concentration camp!

This has the feeling of a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. I’m just waiting for hordes of jolly servants to do a dance with mops and such. The characters are intriguing and I have a feeling that everything is upside down here.

Veridien is certainly an interesting place., quite unlike any boys boarding school or college I’ve ever been to. Lawrence is doing well so far but he will have to stay on his toes. I think he will encounter all kinds of challenges and opportunities here.
