Even now in my 50s having worked in the Middle East for the past 17 years and having bought a home in a stunning village near Cape Town, I still feel the pull of the Natal Midlands and wonder whether I will end there. And then I think of those lines of a song in The Jazz Singer “LAs fine but it ain’t home, New York’s home, but it ain’t mine no more”.

This potentially solves the problem for Christopher, although we do not know for sure. But for Marco it is an eternity of disconnection. I think the best solution is to find a way to reverse the ritual and hopefully allow them both to live this last life together.

Christopher is beginning to implode and Marco, poor Marcus, is trying to hold it together - again.

If Christopher can remember the ritual and the changes might they be able to undo it?

This kind of hell-heaven life of centuries must have had a major impact on Marco’s psyche. I can’t see how it could not.

Sometimes, it seems to me, that thinking and remembering are over-rated.

I imagine that if Marco simply gave up looking for Christopher nd lived his multiple lives with people that made him happy for a time, Christopher would still have the memories and without Marco would probably believe himself insane.

Now that Christopher has reconciled the memories to the present, we can only hope that somehow, the consequences of the ritual can be lifted.

Yes! That would be immensely painful, especially the knowledge that it was going to happen again and again.

The curse of perpetual grief must have been almost unbearable for Marco.
