*sighs* Dogs are pack animals. They a loose, but deeply ingrained social structure. Part of the reason you need to train a puppy is so that you become the pack "alpha". Once the dog is comfortable with that, there is no question about roles, well except for the occasional test. Dogs will also test their roles, their place in the pack. Since Xander is growing, his place is not determined. By age and experince he is not alpha and must assert that position with "active" behavior. Jayne will want to keep the alpha position, and xan will be trying to make sure where he fits. This is what the "fighting" is. It is more of a ritualized play, but like all animals, it can get bloody, and if trained to do so, that natural instinct can be turned into a weapon where the dog thinks it is alpha to everyone ... and small kids die for looking at the dog . Once the "fight" is over, and both are assured of their position, the pack will go back into a peaceful co-existance and take care of each other. If you had like 6 dogs, they probably would not care for each other, but not be mean
