Hmm... well... depends on your definition of 'mythological'. There is a certain body of myth built up around vampires but they are not technically mythological because they are real. OK not in the way they have been depicited in literature and art but real nonetheless. Ironically they are kin to angels, which are not mythological either. I don't watch the news for much the same reason. My daughter's school has a programme whereby they send some sixth form on counselling courses to act as a buffer between the teachers and the kids for bullying victing who for whatever reason don't want to go to the teachers. It worked really well.... apart from the fact that the counselling course convinced my daughter that she had 'abandonment issues' not that she had ever been abandoned but she decided that she must have because otherwise she wouldn't have had the issues. Made me grind my teeth a bit for a couple of years. Fortunately we are best friends now

That could so easily happen to Efan. He is very much the gentle giant but if he snaps then heads will roll. Part of me hopes he will and part of me hopes he won't. At the end of the day it is his life so I will support him either way. The taunts and teasing is cruel. It is far worse than the physical stuff which usually amounts to a few bruises. He is too big and they are too small to really hurt him or put him in fear of physical violence. It's a hard world out there

Personally I don't mind if I see spoilers when I click into a discussion thread. Sometimes it has been what I have read there that has tantalised me enough to go in and read the story.

Both of my children were subject to bullying and, as a mother, it is horrifying to see someone you love more than yourself go through that and not be able to do anything about it. My daughter was lucky that she had a strong group of friend who helped her through and a strong school who grasped the issue and dealt with it well. My son is a different kettle of fish. He is very big for his age, over 5ft and only 8 years old. He is built like a prop forward (rugby term) and he will not fight back, not because he can't but because he knows he will hurt the bully and will not do that. I have signed him up for karate but he is mildly dyspraxic and doesn't have the co ordination for it. He is gentle and intelligent, intuitive and magical but that does not go down well in school. I can only do my best to make his home life as good as it can be and to increase his confidence in every way I can but it is still heartbreaking to see him cry every Sunday night because he does not want to go to school the next day. I don't think it is safe any more to assume that when we send our children to school they will be safe and cared for. It's a sad fact. On the other hand it is a hard world out there and if they can't survive in school where there is at least someone watching out for them they are never going to make it in the real world.

As I have already mentioned children in 1918 were very vulnerable in any event. They OFTEN died before age 5 flu or not. They were malnourished, and under weight. They lived in squalor and were sent out to work. In ANY outbreak the children suffered becuase 1. their immune systems were not developed and 2. they were in no condition to fight.... oh and there were no immunisations These days children are far better equipped to fight illness. They get their immunisations which boost their immune systems very young, they are better fed and not exposed to diseases such as cholera and TB. Very young children will still be at risk as will the elderly and sick but by and large we are far better able to deal with illness now than we were then. I have faith... not in god you understand but faith nevertheless.

Dont forget that in 1918 many people were malnourished, TB was rife leaving those who survivied with lung weaknesses, housing was overcrowding with poor sanitation, many people, even the wealthier ones suffered from poor nutrition and many young men coming back from the war had lung conditions from being gassed. Children often didn't survive past five, and those who did worked down mines, in cotton mills etc and had weakened lungs. It was a very different time. Humankind have an uncanny knack of adapting and coping. We survived the 1918 outbreak and we will survive the 2009 one... if it comes. I refuse to live my life in fear of what might happen. For me the worst already has and I go on savouring every moment, living for today to the fullest extent possible for as long as I can.

I think there is a difference in saying that you have no problem with a religious ideology and in saying you have no problem with that religion's god or view of god. Much of the spirituality expressed by the early Christians was sound but it was twisted and perverted by those who practiced it. Even now there is a lot of good in the theology but again it's what people do in it. It isn't so much a matter of judging a god by his followers it's about judging the words that someone speaks as opposed to what people then do with them. How many times have sound philosophies, theories etc failed to work in practice when corruption creeps in to those who practice them... for example communism which as an ideal is sound as a practice is too open to corruption, even democracy only truly works when everyone is on the same page. Okay bad definitions. I know what I mean but I am tired and I doubt I am making much sense so I will stop there and come back to it when my brain switches on
