This is the story of the trials and troubles of Johnnie, born Edward John Lester in Scotland, in 1842

Although he came from a poor background, with the assistance of a wealthy uncle, Johnnie was able to complete his education and university studies to become a doctor, only to be falsely accused of housebreaking and larceny, and he is sentenced to transportation to the Swan Colony in Australia.

While tracking a potential suspect for multiple murders in the area, a detective comes across a series of journals in an abandoned apartment and begins to read them.
