This story is based on a reader’s comment on chapter 3 of my „Shadow‘s Reach (Halloween Noir)“ story, where he thought about „hungry bottoms“ and if the action in my story could possibly be vampiric in nature. It wasn’t, but it got me thinking … So that‘s what this story is about. The first 5 chapters used to be a self-contained short story that I now have slightly revised.

2025 Halloween Horror short story:

Hellbenders are a species of salamanders. While primarily amphibious, they do occasionally venture onto land. Their numbers are dwindling. It would seem that one population of them have discovered a method to survive in smaller numbers.

The crayfish are happy they’re no longer the hellbender's primary food.
