Change of Heart - 2. Chapter 2
Jeff smiled knowing he was in an exceptionally good mood for no apparent reason. Not yet opening his eyes he also knew he was somewhere between dreams and fully awake. Feelings of euphoria swirled through his being. He mused for a moment, then recalled the night before. He and Paul had made love three times before falling asleep in near exhaustion. Smiling even more broadly, he wanted to shout out his exuberance at simply being alive and in love… in love? Suddenly aware of the extra body in his bed… not his bed… a bed… Paul's bed. For a moment he was reminded of Paul's sometimes stammering speech. That made his smile even bigger. Was he in love with Paul? As he mulled over the question his exuberance faded just to the point where he no longer had to fight the urge to shout.
Opening his eyes, he realized it was almost dawn. Paul was curled against his left side with his head resting on Jeff's shoulder. His right hand was loosely wrapped around Jeff's engorged manhood while his left knee was resting against Jeff's nuts. I would have been miserable working with her. I sort of gravitated to the Veterinarian Care Clinic. I do all my surgeries there and sometimes fill in for one of their doctors. There were three vets until recently. Seems the junior guy got a better offer and left them short-handed. It is evident that these two guys are life partners. They live together but, they aren't flamboyant or feminine. You can just see the love between them. In any case, I intend to make my orientation clear. I'd rather get that out in the open so it won't be a problem later on down the road.
"We are set up to meet tomorrow morning. I am sure I am not the only one interested nor the only one being interviewed. Still, if all goes well, come the first week in January, you are looking at a future partner of the Veterinarian Care Clinic."

Jeff took a cautious sip then grinned broadly, "Pass the cream and sugar, please." Paul looked at him sternly as if in a challenge. Jeff busted out laughing and said, "Just kidding. It's greeeaat!" To prove his point he took a large gulp. Immediately he slammed the mug down onto the breakfast counter and made a mad dash for the kitchen sink. Once there he forcefully spat out the scalding hot coffee.
Paul snickered as Jeff tried to rinse the heat from his mouth. "You should have learned by now; god'll getchu for lyin'." Still grinning, Paul refilled Jeff's mug and suggested, "Let's go sit in the living room."
"You know if Maria's asleep, we could uh..."
"Don't even think about it. Believe me, as tempting as you are... We dodged a big bullet already this morning. Let's not push our luck. Their brains don't process logic or data like a supposedly adult brain. Like this morning, an adult would have surely guessed what we had been up to in the bathroom."
After they sat side by side on the lumpy sofa, Paul continued, "That may be a hard lesson to learn but when there are children around your time is seldom your own. The one thing they crave unrelentingly is your constant attention. I figure when they have the attention of someone they feel loves them, they feel safe. Something for you to contemplate; children get sick, cranky and/or contentious with no rhyme or reason. And that's without contemplating puberty and teenage angst."
"I'm not trying to focus on the negative here. Really, in my opinion, all the negatives are offset by the unconditional love they offer. It may sound like a cliche, but being a parent can be the most challenging and rewarding experience you'll ever have."
Jeff took Paul's hands in his and said, "Seriously Paul, I can see it won't be easy. I know I've been very fortunate in some aspects of my life. I have also experienced profound loss. I can't really tell you how devastated I was when I lost both my parents at the same time. For a while, I couldn't see a way to carry on. If I hadn't had Uncle Joe and Aunt Mellie... well, I am not sure I'd even be here. When families support each other they can accomplish things that seem impossible to an individual. They taught me that. I know we'll have challenges, I think all families do. I want us to be a family more than anything. I want us to deal with those challenges together. If you haven't figured it out by now... I love you and I love my princess."
At that moment a still sleepy little girl came into the living room, climbed up into Jeff's lap and said, "We love you too, Mr. Jeff", then seemingly drifted back to sleep.
Paul could only smile as he watched tears cloud Jeff's eyes.
It was sometime later when Jeff awoke to find Maria was no longer in his lap. Muted conversation coming from the kitchen implied she and her daddy were making breakfast. Jeff stood, stretched and decided, not only was the sofa lumpy it was also decidedly uncomfortable. Taking his mug with him he went to join his family in the kitchen.
"Well, hello sleepyhead", Paul greeted.
"Hi sleepyhead", Maria parroted.
"How long was I out?
"Not long. It's still early. We thought we'd get breakfast ready and then wake you up. Were we too noisy?"
"No. I think it was just time for me to get up. Is there anything I can do? I can be pretty helpful in the kitchen." Jeff moved to the sink and washed his hands.
Paul noticed, "See hon, the first thing thing you should do when you come in the kitchen to get food or to prepare food is to wash you hands. It can help keep us all from getting sick. It gets the germs off your hands so they don't get spread around. Do you remember learning how you can't see germs without a microscope? Then to Jeff, "I know you can be quite handy in other rooms, as well", Paul offered with a snigger. "Can you watch the bacon, while I get these biscuits in the oven? I just need to dab each biscuit with a bit of your meat drippings." Paul used a spoon to collect bacon grease from the hot cast iron skillet. The smug grin on Paul's face let Jeff know exactly what meat 'dripping' he was referring to.
"Yes daddy, I member seeing germs from my hand with your mike-row-scope. Germs are mostly bad. They are everywhere. We can stay not sick if we keep our hands clean." This came out almost like she was reciting a litany. "I think boys are germy, specially Bobby Kingman, he doesn't use tissues. He uses his hand like this..." Jeff laughed out loud. Paul gave him a look that said, 'don't encourage her'. Turning back to his daughter, he said, "Eew! That's disgusting! I certainly hope you don't ever do that again. Even if you are just showing someone how he does it. Now go to the bathroom, wash your hands again and then set the table."
Once she scampered away, Jeff said, "After some of the things we did last night, I think it might be harsh to say that that was 'eew, disgusting'. I think it fell more into the category of 'icky'."
"I have learned some things need a more dramatic response with her. She's pretty smart and picks up on things that you wouldn't expect a child her age to notice. For instance what you said about your Uncle Joe not liking the coffee your Aunt makes... she mentioned that to me some time ago. Did you know that your Uncle always takes an apple to your horse when he visits the stables? Or that your Aunt Mellie gets a nervous tick in her left cheek when she speaks to someone she doesn't like. I sometimes exaggerate my reaction if I really want to get my point across. You should understand that how you react to what she says and does is like an object lesson for her. Our reactions validate or reject her view of the world as she sees it."
Looking around carefully, to make sure the coast is clear, Jeff pulled Paul into his arms asking, "How did I manage to find such a smart daddy?" Then quickly bussed a kiss against Paul's neck which caused him to visibly shiver.
"Keep that up and daddy may have to discipline his boy." With that he smacked Jeff smartly on the butt. Then casually began to wipe down the counter, ignoring the sexual tension that suddenly permeated the air.
Maria, standing in the kitchen doorway, asked, "Did that hurt, Mr. Jeff? Daddy sometimes threatens to spank me if I am naughty. But he never hits me. Specially not that hard."
Jeff put down the spatula, moved to Maria and picked her up. "Honey, your daddy smacked my butt to make a point. It's like with Trigger, you've met him right?" Nodding dramatically she confirmed, "Yes, cause he loves me and he loves you. But what did he want you to pay attention to?"
"He thought my laughing at you doing that hand/nose thing might get you to thinking it was ok for you to do it without using a tissue."
Focusing on her father, she said, "That's silly. Laughing doesn't make it ok. I would never do something so icky! That's what makes boys so gross."
The men fought to hide their smiles.
Jeff was impressed with the biscuits and let Paul know by eating four with lots of butter and strawberry jam. "I can't believe how much I ate! Those biscuits were the best bar none. Maybe part of it was the company but, I can't remember a breakfast I have enjoyed as much as this one. Princess, you scrambled those eggs just right." Maria beamed at the praise.
After everybody helped with the cleanup, it was decided they would go to Jeff's Uncle's ranch to ride the horses. After a quick transfer of Maria's booster seat to the Tahoe, they were off. As they passed his house Jeff wondered if Rosarita was suffering from a hangover. He'd have to make sure to thank her for the great advice.
