Fractions for fun - 1. Look what the cat dragged in

Newsletter game: Pick two nouns!

You get to plug your nouns (in any order) into the following sentences:
[Name] opened the front door and found a (noun). [Name] stared, shocked, but then [Name] remembered I/he/she/they had a (noun) and….

My nouns were cat and sock. This is what happened... Enjoy!

Nathaniel opened the front door and found a cat. He stared, shocked, but then he remembered they had a sock filled with cat nip hanging outside the front door to lure the last remaining foul creatures out of hiding. Still, to see a living cat so close was jolting nonetheless. Ever since the High Council had declared the evil beings banished a few years back, cats had been continuously caught and killed. All in an attempt to cleanse the town of Satan’s influence. But could that really be done so easily? Immediately, Nathaniel blocked the blasphemous thought from his mind. The High Council was always right. They were guided by God and therefore infallible like Him.

The cat turned its green eyes on him, its gaze making shivers go down Nathaniel’s spine.

“Nate…” It seemed to speak to him. “Touch me!”

He shook his head. Not that name. Not those thoughts! They hadn’t crossed his mind in over a year, not since Hezekiel was shunned for his impure and wicked ways, which threatened to lead them all astray. He hadn’t touched another man since, even though his mind was too often invaded by the memories of his time with Zeke… Hezekiel, he hurriedly corrected himself.

The cat’s shiny, black fur looked irresistibly soft. He could almost feel the texture under his fingers, the warmth against his skin. After a quick look around, he knelt down and let his hands glide over the pliant body. The cat began to slink around him, almost knocking him over in its attempts to get close.

Wistfully, he realized how much he missed the simple touch of another living being. As sadness overwhelmed him, Nathaniel succumb to tears. Since his unfortunate incident with Hezekiel, the loneliness was slowly eating him from the inside. With no marriage permitted as part of his punishment, he could never enjoy physical closeness. He had lost that right when he did the unthinkable and got caught in the barn at harvest, naked and sweaty beneath Zeke, as his lover thrust inside him over and over…

“No, Lord! Please save me!” More tears fell as he once again tried to banish the memory. As he hunched over, lost in desperate prayer, the cat butted him in the face and he toppled to his side. Perhaps thinking it was a game, the cat leapt onto his chest, gazing at him. Something caught Nathaniel’s eye. There was a small item attached to a collar around the animal’s neck. Wiping his eyes, Nathaniel reached for it with shaking hands.

It was a wooden cylinder. Curious, Nathaniel carefully opened it. A piece of paper fell out.

“Peach tree at midnight. I’m taking you away. Zeke.”

Sending such a message with a cat. The sheer audacity had Nathaniel laughing out loud. It scared the cat, but he stroked it until it relaxed. He decided they were leaving together. This was one cat which would not be sacrificed.

He would not let himself be sacrificed either.

This was so much fun! I especially liked the challenge of writing a very short scene. Not my forte...

A short scene packed with a lot of meaning. Cool! I like it. And you can't say it isn't your forte anymore.

A great start! Makes me curious for more, now I want to know if the two of them come together safely. I love it. And cats rule! :2thumbs:

Simply amazing. Nathaniel and Zeke, and the black cat, I can see the happy little family living away from the oppressive society.

Oh, great job, Puppilull! You set a great tone with the early area of the scene, giving me the feeling of an early 1600-1700s puritanical society, very "The Scarlet Letter" in vibe. I love the hope at the end to wash away the sadness, too! You did a great job, giving us backstory, a beginning/middle/and end that hints at a happy future.

Wow, the same prompts and the resulting stories are so different !  Authors on GA are really awesome !  This Happily For Now ending is just that, we'd really like to learn more about Nathaniel and Hezekiel and of course the cat in the future, but for now we're happy for them !

:thankyou:

I'm glad to hear you say that! I wasn't fishing for compliments (not only at least ;) ), but was wondering if this could make if safely outside my head.

Cats definitely rule. They made me a bit curious about who they are, but it would take some massive research to take this further.

Great use of the two words.

I feel I got rather kind words to work with. Didn't expect to go to Salem though...

I'm glad you liked my little game entry. It was a bit of a surprise when the idea hit me. I guess I followed the cat.

Yeah, I picture them somewhere far away from the meanies, being able to be themselves. No bad luck from that cat. Thank you for your kind words!

The short scenes sort of sneak up on me. It's freeing to write without plotting and practically without thinking. Thanks!

Thank you! Writing this I put in a lot of time and effort, making changes and working on the tone. I wonder what would happen if I spent as much time on my other writing...? Darn laziness...

These short story things are really so much fun! A way to just let yourself go a little crazy in your writing. To see how others did it is almost as fun as writing myself. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Tack! I hope so too. They should get some peace and quiet in a more liberal place somewhere.

I was picturing funny hats and white collars while writing, just not going the whole hog. Cats will save us all! ;)

Hi @Puppilull! I’m not a fan of cats, but they’re not as bad as Alek…  ;-)

I must be a completely hopeless case, since I'm both Team Alek AND Team Cats! ;)
