The Great Mirror of Same-Sex Love - Poetry - 61. ...in plenitude...

.

[All is white]

The stars around the beautiful moon veil

the clear face when, in its fullness,

she illuminates the earth with silver gleams.

—Sappho

All is white, the moon opens in plenitude,

While at her feet cries the sea’s torment again:

Serene, she views blossom the solitude

E’er untouched by men.

Now stars, who beneath Selene’s divine glow,

Can veil their faces and allow light new birth,

Do so from pristine skies to fall like snow

O’er the silvered earth.

—Renée Vivien, [i]

1903
