The Ultimate Vehicle of Earthly Bliss - 9. During the night

.

Du warst sehr still

During the Night

During the night you said you were a leaf

that could lie atop me and only wish

to root itself deep within my soil.

You were very still,

looking out the window into the night,

waiting for where the miracle lingers

to join people who die together in longing

and connect us like no two ever before.

I kept my thoughts quiet and to myself,

waiting for you. When all of a sudden,

as if our spirits were torn from these two bodies,

they burst into flames –

we were united

– while amid rioting confusion’s red

the blooming glow of redemption broke through –

blazing up into heaven like a torch.

You spoke as I beheld your rapturous face –

“We’re now indivisible, like the light.”

Your translations make the arresting quality of Schwabe’s poems clear to us whose German is rusty. The images are vivid and the lines will echo in my ear.

Thank you for bringing these to us.

The original is such a beautiful poem. I think it's like few I've seen before, able to paint such outwardly and inwardly significant moments in a great economy of words. What great art-song lyrics these would make :)

Thanks, Parker
