By Chance or Appointment - 27. Weather Report and Autumnal Equinox

It has been a hot summer. Even though it is just about to change to fall at the Equinox in a day or so, this still seems to fit the weather this year.

Weather Report

Weathermen have said it’s gonna

steam and parboil flowers and fauna,

over-bright and hot and sweltry,

perspiration on our peltry,

turning shade a different color –

brighter, yet a little duller –

cooking insects, crisping grasses,

sunshine like a thousand brasses,

followed by some evening lightning;

thunderclaps both loud and frightening,

after which, some rains torrential

should make streams more consequential,

but the dawn will see clouds clearing,

robins singing, children cheering,

even though the sun be searing,

daring dogs to heat prostration –

just another day’s vacation.

Autumnal Equinox

September sun, shine down upon the field

and garden which your kindliness makes green

wherein the tastes of summer days are sealed

enough to make a wintry mortal keen

when February’s chilly arms embrace

the hill and forest in its icy sheen,

remember us, in dreams of Queen Anne’s lace

through endless nights the spirit may corrode

and from each countenance a smile erase,

avow to them who strive against the goad

or shiver as the seed in frozen ground

that once again you’ll stride on summer’s road

and warm again hearts withered, cold and browned

so that with ripened love we may be crowned.

Thanks for taking time to check the Weather Report, and may your observance of the Autumnal Equinox be cheerful. I appreciate any comments you may care to leave.

Autumn's cooler temperatures are still a ways off for us here in Florida, but I do remember autumns when I lived up north - beautiful, for sure, but too fleeting and leading to grey days of short light.  As you can tell (and I mentioned before), I am not one who loves the change of weather to cold, dreary days.  Yes, the heat is miserable (thanks for A/C!).  May the younger generation take the lead in reducing our carbon footprint.

All that said, your writing is absolutely superb and beautiful @Parker Owens.  I admire your wordsmithery.

Thank you very much for your kindness in responding to these two. For now, I’m glad of the change to cooler temperatures. Come January, I’ll be wishing I had bottled some of these days so they could be opened and re-enjoyed, like a fine wine.

Your weather reports are much more interesting than the weather network. Both poems made me smile inside. Thanks, Parker.

You’re very welcome. The smiles these poems bring to you warm me too, like the sun. Thanks very much for reading them, and for your comments.
