By Chance or Appointment - 2. Three Summer Skyscrapers

Just three quick summer scenes from the past weeks. As is ever the case, all errors and inconsistencies are mine.

One lone wolf

sings its long clear solo

ringing across the field and forest

soon joined in tune by the antiphonal chorus

chanting the ancient midsummer psalm

beneath brilliant starlight

ever shining.

~

Three dark crows

call to the setting moon

framed in the twisted locust’s branches

hurling rude insults at its fading silver light,

while robins laud the coming of dawn

enough to make the ridge

glow with hope.

~

Now the air

lies heavy and weighty

like blankets piled layer on layer

on a world made still and somnolent by the sun,

or tidings made of dark-suited words,

which cannot ever be

unspoken.

If you took the time to read this chapter, I am most grateful. May I suggest you pay homage to the waning summer by writing some skyscrapers of your own?

These words really brings out the imagery in the minds eye

Thank you. I hope you could hear the wolves, and watch the dawn, and listen to the cicadas mourn under the hot sun.

All great snapshots, but loved the three dark crows hurling insults. Marvelous, Parker!

Such rowdy and unmannerly crows they were! I’m happy you could hear them too.

It's difficult to speak of "highlights" here because each poem glows. More so, each line is radiant in its own imagery and every word is irreplaceable. How do Nature poems get any finer than these? I don't think I know.

I love the solo wolf being joined by its off-key cohorts; and the birds respectively singing to/about the sun and moon; love the melancholy gravity of "tidings made of dark-suited words"

Naturally, I'm taken by the lone wolf. I can clearly see him sitting in a forest glade, maybe wondering about shooting stars?

In my part of the world the crows hurl insults at the rose-ringed parakeets.

I enjoyed your midsummer skyscrapers very much. Thank you.

I’m immensely grateful for your kind words, and still more so for your invention and sharing of this poetic form. Dark-suited words finally completed the much-scratched-out draft of that poem. Perhaps that phrase was worth the waiting and rewrangling.

You’re most welcome, and I’m very happy you enjoyed my observations at summertide. I suspect that crows are skilled at hurling insults the whole world over. Is there such a thing as a well-mannered crow? It was electrifying to hear the wolves sing into the night, and to be so very close to them. Many thanks for reading these, and for sharing your reactions.

I'd say it was

Ever thought of being a horror writer? 🤨😄 You've got the background features off to a 'T'. Crows are clever, inventive, and could easily be the villain of any piece. I love how this darkness (and menace?) is offset by robins (US or UK) and the coming of dawn. Your observations of the natural world never cease to paint such vivid pictures, dear friend.

A horror writer? I’ve never given that much thought. While it’s possible to paint in darker hues, the attraction to brighter tones remains too strong. However,  if these images of wolves and crows and dark suited figures conjure up something scary, then maybe you’re on to something. Thank you for reading these and for your response.
