By Chance or Appointment - 11. Shall We Dance?

The began as an exercise in couplets. This is an object lesson in where such things can lead. As always, any errors are all mine.

If I could dance a sarabande,

perhaps we’d measure, hand to hand,

our paces on the gleaming floor

together, confident and sure;

If I could mark the minuet,

I’d bolder be, try not to fret,

but fix my eyes upon your own

while yet my heart beats, overthrown;

If I could tread a bright courant,

appearing suave and nonchalant,

perhaps you’d fathom my disguise

and my dissembling not despise,

for if my blood trips in gavotte,

then smile at me the way you ought

and then, retiring from the ball,

may we together homeward crawl.

Many thanks to any and all who choose to read these lines. I appreciate your comments and reactions.

What a lovely poem. Great images with rhyme and rhythm dancing in my mind. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks a million. I’m glad the images and impulses got your mind on its toes.

A slow, graceful sarabande is one of my favourite dance rhythms. Playing one immediately gets me into that particular eighteenth-century headspace. Reading your lovely, funny, touching invocations of various dances does just the same. Only with words, not music. Bravo.

I originally chose the sarabande because I liked the sound of the word as it rolled off my tongue. Then, after listening to several, both the rhythm and the poem grew. I’m glad this poem reached into your head and lightened your heart.

I'm confused as to how I missed these poems, but am thankful for finding the treasure. This one is captivating, and makes me want to dance with another. :)  You never disappoint, Parker.

You’re so good to comment on this. I hope this poem got your feet and hips to move, if only a little.
