By Chance or Appointment - 28. Various Intersections

The chapter theme here can be as loose or tightly interpreted as you like. As is ever the case, any errors you find are mine alone.

Relations

Families

are like an old attic

where sepia toned memories lie

asleep where afternoon explorers unpack them,

unfold them and shake out their wrinkles

to laughter before they’re

discarded.

Transformation

On what day

did I become my Dad;

take on his rolling, stoop-shouldered gait,

or match his raspy voice which yet crooned boyhood songs

to children both amused and tolerant,

a greying artifact

of the past?

Reunion

Three decades passed

since I saw you last

and you’ve gone grey;

Yet tricks still play

and memories stray

to bygone light

When your face bright

shone with pure delight

in springtime sun;

And then there were none

who would know our run

or our fate’s cast.

Distress

Please tell me,

in what did I offend,

where is the hurt that, even now,

I would erase and take to myself if I could,

to open in me matching red wounds

that cry aloud the same song

as your own?

Venn Diagrams

For a time

our circles overlapped,

setting their intersections alight

in rainbow-colored harmonies that resonate

within our modest circumferences

and compassed all around

our shared heart.

Thanks for taking a moment to pause at the intersection of your day and this set of poems. I appreciate any comments you care to leave.

I love them all. Becoming your dad is okay sometimes; he was likely a wonderful man. Distressed left me sad—I hate open wounds left alone. Thank you for this wonderful collection.

What a wonderful collection!  Distress speaks most to me today as someone I though a friend has completely ghosted me.  I have offered an apology should I have offended him, but no response.  Your words speak most clearly to me!  Each poem speaks to me in many ways.  I will be re-reading these many times!

Thank you for reading these. You’re right, my dad was a wonderful man. He taught me tons of life lessons without explicitly doing so. Distress speaks to a wound that is still unhealed, a hurt that I may have caused. I grieve about it still. Thanks again.

I’m glad these speak to you, and I join you in lamenting the loss of a friend. Distress is written about just such a hurt. The thought that you would re-read these is wonderful encouragement. Thank you.
