By Chance or Appointment - 29. Coming on Autumn

Here is an experimental poem, using a scheme and pattern of my own devising. It probably resembles patterns from the 16th century, with names long forgotten. Though it seems like a tough puzzle, it's a fun pattern in which to write.

Coming on Autumn

These latter days when katydids still croon

their songs beneath the sparkling skies,

reminding us of endings, all too soon,

unraveling of that which ties

us bound to this, our comforting cocoon,

we wait the final act

while life remains intact.

And as I ponder this, I realize

no fervent wish would I retract,

nor disavow those dreams that some despise,

to see again the light diffract

upon your frame in ways that alchemize

a weekend afternoon

when we lay both in tune.

Let me entreat you, make with me a pact

beneath October’s waxing moon,

enshadowed by the walnut’s leafy bract

where autumn’s golden leaves lie strewn

to share that choice of pleasure we’ve long lacked;

so that our happy sighs

to Scorpio may rise.

Many thanks for reading this experiment. If you think it worth repeating, let me know - I appreciate any and all comments, be they raves or rants.
