Poetry posted in this category are works of fiction. Names, places, characters, events, and incidents are created by the authors' imaginations or are used fictitiously. Any resemblances to actual persons (living or dead), organizations, companies, events, or locales are entirely coincidental.

By Chance or Appointment - 33. Subjunctive

Subjunctive: relating to or denoting a mood of verbs expressing what is imagined or wished or possible. (Oxford Learner's Dictionaries). Any errors you may find are entirely of my own making.

Subjunctive

Perhaps if I’d been born a different man

I’d make a proposition rude

and hope that you might fall in with my plan,

suggestions hardly misconstrued,

but ending on the sofa or divan

with each of us embraced,

all barriers effaced.

Would that the peaceful, late day sun had traced

across our resting frames to span

the arms I want to hold us waist to waist

in light appealing to Gauguin,

while we exquisite, haunting kisses taste

with golden light imbued

and no one to intrude.

But e’er events against desire collude,

preventing fingers interlaced,

our combination ever to elude

us meeting in a tryst unchaste

enforcing an extended solitude,

where never love began

and warm blood never ran.

My abundant thanks to those of you who take the time to read poetry of any kind, and especially these offerings. Any comments or thoughts you may want to share are most welcome.

I do certainly agree with @weinerdog: you have so succinctly and eloquently showed how life/reality often upends the best laid plans we make or hope for!  As a former language teacher, I love the use of the subjunctive!

I’m glad you liked the use of subjunctive here; in searching for a title, it seemed most apt. Indeed, too many plans like this have come to nought, or appear distinctly unlikely. Thanks very much for reading, and for your response.
