By Chance or Appointment - 34. An Old Story

This is a poem that I felt compelled to write over the past twenty four hours. It is a story that is far too old, and much to fresh. I wish it were not so. If you find errors, they are mine alone.

An Old Story

Another school shooting,

and again the screams and fear

echo down the tiled hallways,

rattling the lockers of the collective mind

as little children learn what murder means

firsthand;

And then the media tumult thunders,

their lights blind us;

the noise of them with stories about this story

makes us deaf

to the cries of the children

who cower under desks

or in their homes,

when all they really wanted

was to go to school

and maybe wear an ugly sweater

while singing something off-key about Rudolph;

Instead, the bark of gunfire

is the song of Christmas gone wrong;

of innocents slain

faster than Herod could order,

and no wise men dare appear

to prophesy what this must portend

lest they, too,

become targets.

There is so much to say about that topic but it's tricky to comment on politics on this site. I think Jesus himself could come down and ask "Why haven't you done something about this yet?" And STILL nothing would get done

Thanks for reading this. Your comments echo my cry of frustration. We cannot seem to agree on solutions, yet shouting and hand-wringing don’t seem to help, either.

Why are some Americans so against regulating fire arms?  I know, "people kill people, not guns"... but it takes people to use the guns.  This idea of open carry, lowering age limits for who can buy them, failure to differentiate against automatic weapons vs. regular handguns...my frustrations go on and on.  These senseless acts of violence will not just go away without  strong action by government who are supposed to represent all of us and make laws that protect all of us!  In the meantime, I weep, I pray for all affected, and resign myself to being powerless when confronting my representatives.  Only replies are get are canned ones: "Thanks for contacting my office."

Your poetry is always so moving.  Thank  you for continuing to share your talent even with the saddest of topics.

Your responses from your legislators are akin to mine. Gun violence and gun death is so commonplace, that it seems to defy discussion. All I can hope is that if enough of us say aloud how it makes us feel, how it will move us to vote, then perhaps it’s worth all of us writing prose or poetry about it. Thanks for your comments.

I have to say, I look in from outside in utter disbelief. And the solution touted is to make schools themselves places with guns instead of general regulation. Not something that's going to change over the next few years unfortunately. There's been so much noise about one prominent incidence of violence, and yet, these seem to slip from the front page. Commonplace. Hardly worthy of serious comment.

Again, you use your art for protest.  Your words should shame everyone involved in this spiral of violence.

I distantly remember air-raid and fallout drills in grade 1; even then, nobody seriously believed the worst would happen. In this particular instance, a second grader dialed for emergency response. All too frequently,  200 times a year, the worst happens. So many feel powerless to change any of this, and too many of us feel like potential targets. More firearms will not make us less so, in my opinion. Thanks for reading and hearing my voice.
