Fireworks & Rain - 3. Legacy

We all are in a shitty mood:

today the boss gave us the boot,

twenty years of sweat, blood and tears

our sorrows drowned in too many beers

while he gets away in his fancy suit.

This is how failure tastes:

today I have forever closed the gates

my family’s legacy is gone

generations have squandered money on

too old ideas and lofty ambitions while real potential has gone to waste.

Thank you for reading even though/ because of/ it's a poem or just to take a look.
Everything that sounds/is off is entirely my doing.
Any reaction is very much appreciated.

This poem left me trying to imagine the story behind its lines. It seems so very  sad.

Same here.

There's a complete disconnect between the higher-ups and the worker bees.  It's really quite mind-boggling to me. I was furloughed from my job of 15 years due to the pandemic and ended up leaving for employment elsewhere.  Last year, I went to my old supervisor's retirement party and the company's CEO was there.  When I was introduced, they told him "oh she doesn't work here anymore."  He actually asked me "Oh, why is that?"   The look on his face when I said "Because you furloughed me!" was priceless.  I could continue on with my own rant here, but I won't.  I will say this poem is very evocative and so sadly true.

A expression of frustration that many can relate to when a business comes to an end. The bosses drive away with their pockets full while the loyal workers walk away with little or nothing. Why? The last line - in suitably small print almost ignored - explains, they didn't move with the times, 'too old ideas and lofty ambitions while real potential has gone to waste.' Thought provoking, it lingers in your mind.

Thank for your comment, Mancunian. After I had the poem written I wasn't  so sure if it is a good idea to post it, but your comment shows it was okay.

It would appear so much more than a job was lost here, a family legacy squandered as well...

Yes, there are always two sides of the coin, I'm glad you mentioned this.

I think we've all been here at one time or another.  Greed grips the  corporate world and little concern is given to those that made it go and grow.  Unfortunately, as earlier generations might have known, fixed pensions and lifetime care are a thing of the past and hard work is not always rewarded the way it should be.

A perfect summary of what I wanted to express, thank you Bill.

So many stories come to mind to fill libraries or film archives.

It's overwhelming at times.

Sacrifices go unnoticed, and loyalty is stomped on when it comes down to dollars and cents. Working people have the illusion we are cared for... protected by those above, but the truth is when push comes to shove, we are only numbers. I really got the feeling behind this one. That bitter taste is impossible to swallow away. The rich get richer...

Great poem, Adi. Cheers!

Deep and tragic truth about modern corporate cultures with no loyalty to those who made their businesses great in the first place

The first stanza perfectly states the way the employees would feel when they lose their livelihoods, years of dedicated service down the drain. The second stanza expresses the devastation of the owner watching the legacy handed down to him for safekeeping slipping through his fingers, the history lost as the employees are let go and the lights are shut off for the last time. Beautiful
