Does anyone else ever have trouble just writing sex?

I usually DON'T write sex. I think it's better to leave some things to the readers imagination by creating an erotic mood and feeling without getting graphic.

Dom,

I am back East in New Jersey and I have to say this is the freakiest weather I have ever remembered. One day as you said it super hot and the next day it freezing (in one day the temperature can up or down 40 to 60 degrees)

On one Sunday in February we had over 2 feet of snow in one day (a record for a day's snowfall for us) and by the end of the week it was gone and in the 60s...go figure.

Mother Nature is not happy with us....

Ouch as to the cookies and your hands...One of my friends watches Battlestar Gallatica (and an ex BF does..he loves sci fi) and I don't get it and like you I don't watch much tv and so I can't get into what's going on and why.

I am not a country fan...not much of one so I can relate to not being able to listen to the music you love to find inspiration.

I say dump the cookies and begin again...its only cookie dough....somehow I am betting your two puppies will find their way to the cookies found on the floor.....like your puppy found the lasagna:)

I was also thinking I can't believe you get people screaming at you to change your stories etc....all I kept thinking was WTF...I mean since when does anyone have the chance to call an author on an article or a book or short story or a play and demand changes.....its like everyone is a Hollywood Producer and critic.....what happened to reading the stories for the pure joy of them....oh well....and then there is the humor and the guessing but what will happen next and why and predictions...that's always fun...but to tell an author what to write and how to write..boy am I ever mystified by that one....as I scratch my goatee and buzz cut and wonder my oh my....oh well.

I hope your hands feel better and aren't burned badly and that the weather stays consistent...its lack of consistency has kicked my butt health wise (ups and downs kill my sinuses and ear issues..grrrr)

Good Luck with work and get some rest and feel better:) and I hope you get the music you want at work:)

Spoilers for the last chapter of DD

Oh Dom that was a lovely end to the story. I could have seen it go on a bit more, but I think that's a compliment to you since I just mean I love your writing. I especially appreciated what you did with their emotions re the death of the boy. The first death I really had to contend with was as a teen when a boy I knew quite well, but didn't especially care for and generally treated pretty badly was killed in an accident. I remember that awful feeling of just not knowing how to react or what to do. I think you captured that feeling perfectly. My hat's off.

As for your question about writing sex, I agree with you. I know there are some writers who actually get a charge out writing the porn bits, but honestly there really is nothing more tedius as far as I'm concerned.

The problem is there's only so much you can change with each scene to keep it from becoming repetitive and boring. There's also that pesky problem of figuring out the choreography-- where everybodies hands, feet, knees etc are supposed to be at any given moment and making sure that you aren't describing something that could only be accomplished by a circus acrobat. Even when you get it right it's still basically the same old, same old. Even if the readers don't think so, I do and so I find that the more I write, the less I write sex and when I do, it's got to be because it's absolutely necessary and I've figured out a way of presenting it that doesn't sound like everything else I've ever written. Fortunately I've never been known for being an especially hot writer anyway, so I don't think anyone who manages to plow through my stuff is expecting much anyway.

Hey man,

I grew up in Central Jersey...in fact, my id comes from an advertising campaign for the Devils in 1995 (you might remember hearing "Fire on Ice," if you're a hockey fan B) ) Anyway, my mother has been complaining mercilessly about how she's getting more snow this year than I am (I go to school in the Twin Cities)...she doesn't stop until I tell her about our nice little adventure with -45 degree windchills last month, hehe.

I vote for eating the cookies, as for the hand I hope you put it under cold water right away *end of mothering*.

My music tastes are quite unique, so listening to Country at work would be hard to deal with, my advice, get an MP3 player and it won't matter.

Which hand is it by the way? Injury of hands is always bad for guys ;):P

I love Battlestar Galactica, but it's the kind of show with a grand overarching storyline, and individual episodes aren't self contained, so I can understand why you would be confused jumping in to the middle of it. Try renting the DVD of the miniseries that kicked off the first season of the show from Blockbuster. It will probably explain alot of things and if it doesn't get you interested in the series, then probably nothing will.

Also, thanks Dom for the wonderful ending to a wonderful story

Sex. We all do it, we all enjoy it, but the fact of the matter is (for me - can't speak for anyone else) the concept, the dreaming about it, the eroticism of reading about well drawn and liked characters 'getting it on' is often far more powerful than the real thing.

Much like like orgasms. You get orgasms, and then occasionally you get ORGASMS!

Age difference is interesting too. Why is it that the idea of our parents, or grandparents having sex is such an anathema? My guess would be genetics.

Anyway, you don't need anyone telling you how to write anything.

PS Eat the cookies if they are 'fluffless'. Though if you waited to read this they're probably mouldy in which case don't. Battlestar Galactica is good, but you have to get into it, which requires time... Beware! TV soaks away our lives.

Who cares about Battlestar Galactica's story ? This serie contain three of the hotest guys on TV right now :

- Jamie Bamber (Apollo) <-- so well deserved

- Michael Trucco (Anders)

- Tahmoh Penikett (Helo)

But more seriously, the story makes no sense if you haven't begin with the mini serie and then went on with the episodes in the right order. But even then, I doubt you'll like it. It has some serious mature content. Though I like it for that. Star Trek is good but it was about time Sci-Fi shows stopped being for kids (Give me back firefly!).

What am I stammering about, anyway ? O_o

Hmmm, this is probably too late for you, but I would have eaten the cookies (before your dogs do). I mean it's not like you were serving them to guests (or if you were, they wouldn't know they fell on the floor, right ;) ).

And Battlestar Galactica!!! The other comments were right, it's hard to just jump in at the middle, but OMG, just for the eye candy alone, you have to watch it!! See, we Tivo BSG, and when it gets to the slow parts, I just fast forward, and then when they start showing some skin (like they did with Apollo  ), you can pause, and just stare at him in his boxer briefs, memorizing every ridge in his abs, and drooling over his triceps....*AHEM*...Sorry about that, he's just too frackin hot for his own good.

By the way, thank you sooooo very much for Dessert Dropping! It ended wonderfully.

Take Care,

Vic

Heee...Dessert Dropping...cookies on the floor...

Sorry, couldn't help myself.

And yes, Battlestar Galactica...each season has started while I've been on break at home, but when I get back to school I never have the time to watch (it's Friday night, c'mon SciFi! Don't impede my inebriation!). Every time I see it now, I have to consciously keep myself from watching it...because I'm enough of a nerd to NEED to see every episode in the right order and not miss anything.

I was the same way about Babylon 5...and don't even get me started on Firefly... :read:

i think i would've eaten the cookies anyway.

and for battlestar galactica, you have to start at the beginning. i remember trying to watch the first couple episodes before the 3-hour mini-series and being totally confused. i totally love it now, of course. if you did start at the beginning and are confuddled...well, i don't know what to say about that.

Yeah, I've backed off of sex I originally planned for characters -- sex which I originally thought had to happen in a particular place in the story because of the development of the plot and characters -- because it was so hard to write. I have a rule for writing sex scenes that almost makes it possible: the rule is, write them like dinner scenes. That is, you put as much detail in as moves the story forward in some way or another. And I have another rule: every thing in the story has to do at least two things for the story: develop character, setting, plot, establish motivation, build a coherent style, whatever, any two of them (though they ought to be the right two for the moment).

So that makes it better, but almost every time I end up writing less sex than I originally thought the story called for. I think it's for the same reason I prefer to wear sleeves.

jfinn, where can I read other works of yours? I really liked The Human Condition.

Glad you liked it. As Dom said, you can find a lot of my stories at Archerland along with a ton of other good stuff from some other very talented authors including the master himself, Nick Archer. I also have a few more stories that I've written that are about straight sex (gasp :lmao: ). If you're up for that the link to my author page is jfinn @ Literotica.

And Dom, thanks for the plug on Chasing Fire. That was actually an experiment I tried to see if I could write stroke. I wasn't exactly successful at achieving that, but it's about as good it's going to get from me. Seems like no matter how hard I fight against it a story always seems to creep into what Im writing. Another weird thing about that story is that it's really two. The one you know on Archerland and the heterosexual version that's up at Lit. I think the gay one works better, but that's probably because it's in first person while the het one is third, which I'm not as fond of writing.

PS Glad the cookies were good and floor flavor free.

BTW, I just can't resist saying this. So many people have referred to it as "Dessert [sic] Dropping" ... so that would be like *ahem* cookies on the floor? 0:)

Edited to add: well, I just went back and read through this thread again and noticed that icedfire already said this several posts up. *yikes* :*)

Dom..see there was a reason why you accidently dropped the cookies on the floor...no pun intended....you did it in honor of Des(s)ert Dropping(s)...

I can't believe you wrote this. Didn't you see the episode of the Myth Busters where they tested food that had been lying on the floor for a few seconds and the food was like totally covered in 'orrible germs. :nuke: :nuke:

What if our favourite net author got sick? :(

As for sex, when Dom wrote about it being easier to have than to write about, I am tempted to repeat I can't believe he wrote that, but then he is 22 B) .

I would say eat the cookies. You know they're going to taste yummy. Hehehe... at least that's what I would do...

And I'm so addicted to Battlestar Galactica. Definitely rent the miniseries if you can and see if you like it (even if just for staring at Apollo and Anders). :D
