What's wrong with my body?

Thorn Wilde

WARNING: Getting mildly graphic about my symptoms here, so don't read if that bothers you...

I've not been around as much lately because I've been ill and I'm starting to worry. I've been almost constantly sick since before Christmas. I really thought I was finally better and then this throat infection took hold, the day after my birthday, no less. (Happy Birthday, Thorn! Here, have some more pain!) I'm tired. I don't sleep well. I wake up way before my alarm, feeling sick and miserable. For the third day in a row, I threw up first thing in the morning (today I made sure to down a glass of water before it happened so I wouldn't have to dry heave like I did yesterday). It's the mucus, coming down my throat from my nose, triggering my gag reflex. This happened before, a couple of months ago. I got some anti-emetics from my doctor but they're not working now. On the plus side (is there a plus side?), I'm getting some major exposure therapy for my emetophobia.

At this point, when I've been sick so much for such a long while, I can't help but wonder if there may be some underlying cause. What's happening to me? What's wrong with me? You know, aside from the obvious; the anxiety and depression and hypomania and all that. What's wrong with my body? Why is it like this?

I think I need to see the doctor again.

You should definitely see the doctor again. You shouldn't be experiencing perpetual illness/infections. It sounds like the root cause isn't being addressed?

Hope you can find an answer - and reprieve from feeling sick all the time.

Thanks, Mac. I'll see about making an appointment with my GP.

(Not sure how you feel about needles, but have you tried acupuncture?)

Heh, my uncle is an acupuncturist, actually. Maybe I'll see if he wants to stick some needles in me this summer. I'm a skeptic, but who knows, right? Can't hurt.

When doctors keep prescribing antibiotics (or similar), and illnesses keep returning, then something else needs to be tried. I'm a believer of acupuncture. I used to suffer from vicious cycles of sinus infections for many years until I tried acupuncture. Life changer for me. Not saying it will be in your case... and I still think you need to get down to the root cause... but you may find some relief. And if he's your uncle - hey! No reason not to try it.

No antibiotics here, as all of this seems to have been viral. They're pretty conservative with prescribing antibiotics over here, unless it's absolutely necessary. But yeah, I may give the needles a go. :)

awww Thorn, sorry it's been so rough. be firm and don't let the GP just poo-poo you and your symptoms.
now, have you changed your toothbrushes, and used anti-bac wipes on all the hard surfaces in the house? light switches, door knobs, remotes, phones, etc. some of those viruses can be very hardy.  and you don't want to keep passing those viruses back and forth on those surfaces.

I haven't, but that's good advice. Thank you, molly.

Thorn, have you been screened for acid reflux (called GERD in some medical circles)?  Some of the throwing up symptoms sound similar to mine.

I don't think that's it... I just get these coughs. Takes a bit of it before anything actually comes up. But it's worth checking out. Thanks. I'm sorry you get sick, too.

I had wondered why I hadn’t seen you around much, but we don’t seem to read a lot of the same stories so that’s not too unusual.

I don’t have any experience with anything similar, so I don’t have any health advice this time.

Any allergies you know of ? I had a friend who developed gluten allergy, and some of his symptoms sounded like yours.

It’s not gluten. Often, things like bread, salted biscuits and so on are the only things I can eat without feeling sick, so...

Have you seen a doctor recently?

I’m going next Tuesday.

I talked to my mum today, and she and my aunt both have this thyroid thing. I got tested for it a few years back, but might be worth testing again. So gonna start by asking my doctor about that.

Milk ? Or it could be anything or nothing, but just getting checked it's not an allergy could be worth while. I hope your doctor doesn't give up easily.

Especially in the past, and in certain cultures, doctors would be dismissive of these sorts of symptoms and would blame the patient. Fortunately, most doctors are more understanding and empathetic. And patients have access to more information about their own health.

I'm lactose intolerant. I do have friends who are allergic to milk protein, but they all have severe gastro-intestinal symptoms similar to celiac disease. I don't. (The throwing up is because of phlegm and cough, often it's just dry-heaving.) Not gonna rule anything out before talking to my doctor, though.

My GP is anything but dismissive. She's a wonderful human who really takes care of her patients. Which would be why she's so popular and why I still go to her even though I don't live anywhere near her practice anymore. She'll take me seriously.
