Three Poems for Colin

for Colin

Sonnet No. 1

Your fingers inch along my shoulder blades,

Caressing, releasing, gripping and spread

Like dripping flame to drench me in cascades

Where every part of me your hands are led.

Soothing exploration is what I feel,

A student under a master's care,

Whose object is loving and meant to heal,

Though silent and extremely aware.

But the fire in me which your caress stokes

Is only fueled the more as you explore

The hidden place your intellect uncloaks,

Embracing, relenting, curing once more.

Yet still, the greatest fact is how you allow

My novice hands to return your hold right now.

Sonnet No. 2

Sometimes when caught in the act of lovemaking,

I’ll lock on your soulful eyes then and wonder

How a life with you might look in the making –

In the time before Death drives us asunder.

Images of working a garden plot

Float before my vision, and how you might

Smile on me, squinting from some sunny spot

To complete the perfect view of my sight.

But I’ll just touch the side of your face, as you

Come to the moment of finishing, and feel

Contentment find its way, shining then all through

Your warm gaze reminding my heart to stay real.

Living for the future, but full in the moment,

Brings the greatest ecstasy of true enjoyment.

Sonnet No. 3

Helen’s looks cast loose a thousand warships,

But yours, those which I admire right now

Hovering above my face, can hers eclipse

And launch fleets of memories in me somehow.

Is it fair to watch a boy and recall

Ones who captured my fancy long ago –

Those who I’ll never have, yet still enthrall

When your eyes lock on mine and beauty bestow.

A fate-tossed Aeneas, I never mind

The destiny your smile might unlock,

‘Long as you take and don’t leave me behind

Pining alone on some wind-shorn dock.

Do you know all I see when I look at you?

The past renewed, and a future set sail too.

what a wonderful group of sonnets!

in the first one, that last pair of lines just touches something deep inside
the second and third ones speak to those moments in a relationship where these things, the reason we fell in love, the events of the past and the hopes and dreams for the future, become so clear, the memories so crisp

i loved them all, AC, thank you so much for sharing them

These are marvelous. Sonnet no. 1 speaks of gentle, insistent exploring, and number 3 captures my yearning heart. The last quatrain of no. 2 reverberated in my heart most of all. Colin is a very lucky man.

Thank you, Parker. I think the luck flows the other direction, but I will take your compliment gladly :)

As a poet yourself, you know how valuable positive feedback can be, so I warmly thank you again for sharing how these poems make you feel. Muah

It is wonderful to read those three today. A beautiful break inbetween all the other things. 🙂 Thank you for sharing.

Hugs for your difficult day, and it makes me feel good to know these poems became a bright spot for you. Thank you, as always, dear Lyssa, for supporting and encouraging my work :)

These each are beautiful and it does my heart good to see these from you. I presume they are new and I'm glad you can still write them.  I don't mean that in a bad way … only your translations have been of such hardship and pain, I am glad to see love and beauty from you, my friend.

Thank you, Mike. Your words are kind and thoughtful, and I always appreciate that :)

You are right that the Regiment translations have been an emotional challenge to get through; he pulls no punches, and it's part of why I think they are so important. So, I was motivated to read through and post these Colin poems yesterday to form a sort of bright spot. They were written over the period of about a year, a few years ago.

It's true I have not been writing much while working on the war poems, but that effort is coming to an end. Thank you again, as always, for your support and encouragement

Molly, your thoughts on my poems are always amazing. I'm forever happy to hear what you think :)

The feedback here is great. Obviously, when a poet writes something, he or she does it for personal reasons, or because of personal experiences. It sounds very basic, but for someone like me to feel a reader respond to poetry with their own thoughts and experiences is wonderful.

It's very rewarding, and I thank you humbly
