Ieshwar Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 You guys are good! I have watched only Brokeback Mountain. I have watched Billy Elliot too but it's centred on dance rather than homosexuality. Good movie, though! Ieshwar
BeaStKid Posted June 22, 2007 Author Posted June 22, 2007 You guys are good! I have watched only Brokeback Mountain. Ieshwar Yeah...Billy Elliot was more focused on Ballet Dancing than homosexuality... what about Philadelphia??
Site Administrator Graeme Posted June 22, 2007 Site Administrator Posted June 22, 2007 I'll agree that Philadelphia is gay-themed, though the era in which it was produced made the gay-theme more subtle than it could have been. A good and thought-provoking movie, though.
ashessnow Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 (edited) I wouldn't call Billy Elliot "gay-themed". A good movie and it has a gay character in it, but it's not gay-themed in my opinion. We are talking about gay THEMED movies. Not movies with only gay characters or relationships. Gay THEMED movies; Billy Elliot is one of them. While it is true that the movie isn't focused on homosexuality, that doesnt mean it doesn't have THEMES that relate to the gay community. Just like when seeing the second X-Men movie, there is a scene where a character comes out to his parents that he is a mutant. No, he is not gay and the movie has no gay characters, but that doesnt mean there aren't THEMES in these movies that we all can relate to. Edited June 22, 2007 by Nerotorb
Site Administrator Graeme Posted June 22, 2007 Site Administrator Posted June 22, 2007 I understand what you are saying. However, in Billy Elliot, I would say the sub-theme is to do with masculinity/femininity, rather than homosexuality. Is "dancing" a proper masculine activity? There is a link in that a boy who does what society considers to be "effeminate" activities is often considered to be homosexual (and that is the case in the movie), but I would say that is minor. I still enjoy the movie and I'm very happy to have a discussion on it. It just doesn't spring to mind for me when talking about gay-themed movies, that's all I'm happy to concede that you have a different (and perfectly valid) opinion on the subject.
Morganx Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 Adam and Steve is a great gay romantic comedy. One of my favorites so far.
Guest raz Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 The only gay-themed movies I've seen in English are Brokeback Mountain (didn't really care for it) and Transamerica (I actually enjoyed it... Kevin Zegers? HOT!) My favorites are all subtitled and Asian lol: Eternal Summer Nagisa No Shindobaddo No Regret Formula 17
Matthew Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 Let's see. In no particular order: Trick True Love The Trip But I'm a Cheerleader Latter Days I think that's all of the ones I really liked.
LittleBuddhaTW Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 Already listed here that I've really enjoyed are "Sommerstrum" (Summer Storm), "Formula 17" (a Taiwanese gay movie), "Beautiful Thing" (one of my all-time faves), "Latter Days" (I've always wished I could corrupt a cute Mormon boy), "Mysterious Skin" (Joseph Gordon-Levitt has a cute butt!) and "C.R.A.Z.Y" (something about cute boys speaking French ... mmmmm). A cute French indie film called "Ma vrai vie a Rouen" (My Life On Ice) was also really good, and the main character, played by French actor Jimmy Tavares, is H-O-T. I also really enjoyed a Hungarian indie film called "Abandoned" ... it isn't overtly "gay," but there is definitely a homoerotic sub-context there. It's a very sad movie, though, so prepare yourselves. Finally, "Wild Tigers I Have Known" is another really good one, and it's pretty new (it was on On Demand a month or so ago).

I would add Sugar to this list--with Andre Noble (now deceased) and Brendan Fehr. It's a darker movie, much like Mysterious Skin, but very good.
JamesSavik Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 OK- now how could you guys forget to mention: L.I.E.
Xiao_Chun Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 OK- now how could you guys forget to mention:L.I.E. One of my all time favorites!
Xiao_Chun Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 Last week I watched two amazingly beautiful movies at the San Francisco International LGBT film festival. 1. Eternal Summer 2. No Regret I loved the movies so much that I bought the DVD's right after watchin the movies in theater. You can get the DVD's from YesAsia. The first movie is from Taiwan and the second from Korea. The beauty and talent of the main characters is beyond my verbal capabilities  Hugs, Michael.

A friend recommended both movies, and I couldn't help but make connections between the two best friends... then the girl thrown in, then the final scene at the beach. Either way, I love them both. I'm surprised someone else here has seen them as well.
Adrian Michaels Posted June 24, 2007 Posted June 24, 2007 Oh yes, it was Beautiful Thing. Thanks for helping remember!! AHHH I totally cried watching that movie. Not only because it was super cute, but because everyone was just SOOO British!! And Man, looking at this list, I've seen a ton of movies that I haven't thought of... And they're all some of my favorites. 1. Shortbus... OMG. Its just sooo good. Totally shocking too, but still pretty great. 2. Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Made by the same guy as Shortbus... Good, Good, Good movie. And the songs will never get out of your heard. 3. Camp. Awww. I watched this, because i'm a total theatre kid. And its just fun. The soundtrack totally sucks though, so don't buy it. I was so sad that some of my favorite songs weren't even on it. I really wanna see Poster Boy eventually... When school starts up again, I have a list of the movies I want to see.
ashessnow Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 OK- now how could you guys forget to mention:L.I.E. I believe I mentioned it like, a page ago, thank you very much.
colinian Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 OK- now how could you guys forget to mention:L.I.E. I was 15 and at home alone one night. I was channel surfing looking for something to watch, and L.I.E. came on one of the cable movie channels. It freaked me out! I had occasional nightmares for weeks about that movie. Paul Dano (he played the teen in Little Miss Sunshine) was excellent. Brian Cox played the pedophile and that character is what freaked me out. He was so realistic! It still gives me the shakes when I think about it. Definitely not for someone 15 years old! Colin
Marty Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 Many of my favourites have already been listed... In particular: Beautiful Thing, Get Real, and L.I.E. I tend to agree with a few others here regarding Brokeback Mountain. A good enough film, but not as good as all the hype about it suggested. A few others that (I think) have not been mentioned:- Wilde: With Stephen Fry. Based on Oscar Wilde's life. A sad story. Total Eclipse: Based on a true story. The scene where the naked Leonardo DiCaprio (the young poet Rimbaud ) has sex with Davis Thewlis (his older mentor) amazed me when I first saw it. My Own Private Idaho: Just gotta love River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves. The scene that will always stand out for me is the one where the guys on the covers of the Porno magazines are chatting to each other. Nine Dead Gay Guys: A hilarious comedy about two Irish lads as they "stumble their way through the London gay underworld in search of gainful employment". I laughed so much my sides were hurting when I watched this one. The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things: Gay themed, rather than gay, this one is not for the faint-hearted. The child-sexual abuse in this one is far worse than that in L.I.E. I must admit that this one really upset me - even though I had read the book (by J T Leroy) before watching it. My Beautiful Launderette: Maybe not the best in the genre, but it stands out in my mind as it was probably the first film with a gay theme that I ever saw. It was shown again on Irish TV a few years back. I must dig through my old video collection sometime. I think there's a few others I have forgotten... Marty

Thanks, Marty, for the reminder
Jack Scribe Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 ARGH! How could I forget My Own Private Idaho!!! Thanks, Marty, for the reminder Absolutely! River and Keanu were terrific. If you go back to AMC archives, check out the subtle gay theme (because of the times) of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. The Elizabeth Taylor character (Maggie) was continually frustrated because the Paul Newman character (Brick)couldn't satisfy her. And then recall the sensitive lad in Tea and Symphony. There was no doubt where Tom's sexual orientation was pointed (pun intended). Jack
Benji Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 Oh, I thought Sommersturm was adorable.. Um.. There's this one I saw... I can't remember the title... About two British kids, who are neighbors... And there's lots of Mamma Cass songs in it...lol Its a good movie, but its just been so long since I've seen it. If you're looking for a funny, not so serious movie, the Birdcage is great. It is called A beautiful Thing.............and I thought it was great!!

Razor Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 Somebody already said To Wong Fu, but it deserves being mentioned again. That movie is so AWESOME! Oh, and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert was quite delightful as well.
