MikeL Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 Cliff James has released Pushing the Limits, chapter 41 of Changing Lanes. "Basic instincts, social life. Paradoxes side by side Don't submit to stupid rules Be yourself and not a fool. Don't accept average habits Open your heart and push the limits." ~ Enigma
Phantom Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 Well I'm off to go sharpen the pitchforks, line up the t-shirts and light the torches... just in case... When I get on the train I'll read this and we'll see if SPiCE should get involved.... Eric
Benji Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 (edited) ....................Great chapter, had me sitting on the edge of the cliif!! Horst came up with the best vehicle accommodations possible allowing him to take everyone in one trip, a little smelly... "That may be for the best, as it is still very... smelly. We swept out the goat droppings but the odor remains." But the State Department is going smell worse pretty soon! I'm sure Helen and Instinct's fine name will be restored rather quickly, Broderick Worthington Graeme a former Deputy Director may want change his to mud. It is funny that the band and Scar have not sighted each other yet, Poor Scar is within reach of his bombs and trying to pacify his three guards that the band is only slightly on his mind. Ever notice how weird happenstance can be? You could be in the same room with someone and not see them at all, but go to a crowded amusement park 600 miles away and run into someone you hadn't seen in years. Edited June 16, 2009 by Benji
Drewbie Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 I got a bad feeling, why wont the scar attack? and Jansen should really tell Eric that description of the people around them.

Conner Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 Right now everyone has other things on their minds. I've had the same thing on my mind for several chapters now.
MikeL Posted June 16, 2009 Author Posted June 16, 2009 Goat droppings? And that bureaucrat's name! Where does CJ get this stuff? He must spend a lot of time ruminating on the edge of a cliff. This is a good chapter...lots of action and intrigue...but woefully lacking in the resolution of all the suspense. That's what keeps us coming back for more. Thanks, CJ.
Enric Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 I am sensing that the name Graeme is not one of the positively favoreds for CJ Reasons for such an aversion could be evident to some, though I think I am not aware of everything
Site Administrator Graeme Posted June 17, 2009 Site Administrator Posted June 17, 2009 I am sensing that the name Graeme is not one of the positively favoreds for CJ Reasons for such an aversion could be evident to some, though I think I am not aware of everything I can't think of any reasons myself, either... After all, it the name of a line of Scottish Kings. Maybe CJ has a dislike for the Scots, though haggis is made from sheep, not goats....

I cannot recall any scots king so named in my repertoire of medieval knowledge...
Site Administrator Graeme Posted June 17, 2009 Site Administrator Posted June 17, 2009 pray tell what Scots kings....I cannot recall any scots king so named in my repertoire of medieval knowledge... Damn you! Here I am, thinking for years, that it was the name of Scottish kings, and now you've pointed out that I'm completely mistaken  It's definitely a Scottish name, though, being the alternative spelling for Clan Graham. Just not a royal name
Site Administrator wildone Posted June 17, 2009 Site Administrator Posted June 17, 2009 Thanks for the chapter CJ, thanks for sharing . Two comments: Ewwwwwww, dried smelly goat droppings Second, usually CJ can hide something in a name. So lets look at the name Broderick Worthington Graeme. Broderick, sometimes goes by Brody. Worthington, the only time I've seen that name is in DK's Rich Boy series. When he found Worthington too pretentious, he went by Michael. Lastly, Graeme, another spelling of Graham. Okay, so we have Brody Michael Graham. I've got nothing

C James Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Well, Jansen is on his way to see Eric, with Tequila. Okay, now, I can say what the big clue in chapter 37 was; the receipt for the storage unit in Jim's wallet. Yuri found it, and recognized it for what it is. Yuri and The Scar now know where the storage unit is. Of course, they are all distracted by the imminent eruption, which could come at any time. ....................Great chapter, had me sitting on the edge of the cliif!! You could be in the same room with someone and not see them at all, but go to a crowded amusement park 600 miles away and run into someone you hadn't seen in years. Well, as for the nefarious Mr. Graeme; the narrative does say that he has a prickly disposition. Think one scenario through... he's in very hot water as long as Helen has the bombs. On the other hand, if The Scar gets them while Helen is refusing to disclose their location... who would be the one in hot water then? Mr. Graeme, or Helen and Instinct? And Lol, yes, a goat transport. Actually, there are lots of goats on those islands, so it would be the most likely form of livestock truck. Besides, i couldn't resist. Goat droppings? And, ummm, could you please issue an Amphibious Declaration 0f Cliffhanger-free? Damn you! Just not a royal name Well, Graeme, I'm so please to hear that you would have preferred Graeme to be ROYAL name. Fortunatly, you have come to the right place! We'd be happy to help, right, everyone. How about King Graeme, King of Cliffhangers. I like the sound of that... So, what say ye all? Graeme for 2009 King of Cliffhangers!!! :king:
Site Moderator TalonRider Posted June 17, 2009 Site Moderator Posted June 17, 2009 Sometimes an author likes to bring team members, or a fan, into a chapter. I don't think I've seen an author include themselves quite like this. Tim used CJ and myself in some of his chapters. You'll notice Garam Sarr in my signature. That comes from The Scrolls of Icara and at some point in the future, I'll be making another appearance both by Talon and Jan.
Phantom Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 CJ... since I read the chapter and noticed that there was very little mention of Eric... I think my threats scared you a lot... for that I'm sorry... and now I go shave my head in shame Good chapter CJ... just remember the mob is watching

So the question is, will he be tame Eric or will he be wild Eric? Only CJ and the team know for sure.

So the question is, will he be tame Eric or will he be wild Eric? Only CJ and the team know for sure. At least Eric is in a fairly safe place to have some tequila, except for the volcano, The Scar, and his armed henchmen.
Site Administrator Graeme Posted June 18, 2009 Site Administrator Posted June 18, 2009 At least Eric is in a fairly safe place to have some tequila, except for the volcano, The Scar, and his armed henchmen. You left off Helen from that list....
Phantom Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 You left off Helen from that list.... IMHO, she's scarier then Scar...
Benji Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 IMHO, she's scarier then Scar... .........Don't forget Jane, it wasn't clear who all left on the first load out, and the goat didn't give us the ole 'women and children first' routine. Jane may blow up higher then the volcano!
Site Administrator wildone Posted June 18, 2009 Site Administrator Posted June 18, 2009 Okay, so some things we do know, and some questions. We know now that Yuri and The Scar have located the storage unit of the other two nukes. I imagine the scrapped walls and the tire marks will lead the two to the unit quite easily. Since The Scar seems to think things through logically, he should be looking for a unit hidden from the surveillance cameras. We also know that the highway is now two lanes going north. Not until the majority of the people have fled to the the north, will a south lane open up. This means not only will the crew member with the Jetta won't get back, but Felicia and Brian, and Yuri with the bomb on the hotel bus will make it either. My question would be, is Felicia and Brian closer to the resort than Yuri is with the bomb? They went all the way back to the hotel to check with Horst, so why didn't they come upon the truck with the bomb, or Yuri with the bus (and now the bomb). Or did they take the bomb to the airport already? With Yuri taking the time to exhume Jim and Linda, and since it happened on the side of the road, why hasn't anyone else seen them? Maybe the farmer is the key to this question. Last serious thing I wanted to mention, The Scar is assuming that the Instinct group is unarmed, as he has seen Felicia or the General as of yet. I imagine he'll be surprised when he comes face to face with a RPG and MK 47. Oh, and if the Scar ends up in the pool again due to a drunken Eric, would this be considered the pool party that Conner has been waiting for?

Oh, and if the Scar ends up in the pool again due to a drunken Eric, would this be considered the pool party that Conner has been waiting for? Good point on the traffic! Yep, it's all one-way at the moment. The farmer only heard the gunshots... He's not that close, so probably didn't see anything. The area is largely evacuated, due to all the ash. The ambush site was a narrow road between rock-walled feilds, in a hilly area. Very rural and lightly populated even before the ash. The authorities might not be overly responsive in the area; managing the evacuation would be their top priority. Yuri and the bomb weren't seen by Felecia and Brian; the henchmen moved the truck to the henchman's main bivouac point, inland from the airport. I'm going to attach a map of La Palma, made from Google Earth, that shows the relative locations of everything. The volcano, BTW, isn't just where the symbol is; it's a fissure system, running from just south of the tunnel to almost the south tip of the island, over ten miles. If you look close, you can see the string of cones and craters. The volcano symbol, though, is a good indicator of where the ash ventings have been occurring. Or to be more precise, further south, inland from the resort. Most of the activity, so far, has been from a single vent. However, Cumbre Vieja's past behavior often includes more than one vent at a time, and includes eruption from long fissures, up to miles in length. Also, the whole area south of the tunnel and west of the volcano's crest (roughly, that line of cones and craters) is what the geologists have warned is about to slide into the sea. CJ
