How much words to write in FanFiction & Fiction?

Well, I write FanFiction & Fiction, mostly Romance, only 1 that's non-romantic and I haven't even posted it online, nor do I intend to. But to my FanFiction fans (Anime FanFiction) I could- per say, write a 3 line chapter and they'd be okay w/ that extremely. But to my Fiction fans, 3 a page- front to back isn't enough. So what is enough? (No, I actual don't write 3 line chapters. XD )

It varies depending on the author and story for the most part. I've read quite a few authors and the mid-line chapter length seems to be about 5k a chapter. Sometimes more, sometimes less. My own chapters are normally in the 4k range for serial chapter stories. My short stories will go all the way from that 4k to about 15k. To each their own really.

It also depends on what you want to tell in a story or a chapter of a story. When I start writing I write too much (both in my fiction as in my professional publications) and I have to delete about half of what I write (especially in my professional publications).

Now me personally, I love a long and well written story or chapter but the keyword here is "well written". When a lot is wrong with either spelling, grammar or style no one wants to read it. I prefer a short but well written chapter over a long badly written chapter.

And I think you should pay less attention to what your fans want. When it is a popular and well written story, we readers always want more :)

It's just, it's really hard since I'm on mobile, and this phone can only write so much, so it's hard giving my fans - & not only my fans, my wife also. Of what they want.

You write on mobile?

Well, as a reader, I like the chapters between 2k to 5k. I take lots of breaks when reading. :P

Yes, I goto my mobile email, write the story (remebering my phone can only write so much) I have to send myself the story in alot of parts through email, then whenever I get the chance, go to a computer. Check email, come to a story site, and post post post. I'm actual using my phone right now. And each email is 2/half pages wroth, but still not long enough. I mean like right now, I have chapter 2 of one of my stories sitting in my email, can't wait to get on a computer, and post em' I'm actual starting all over w/ my FanFiction stories, my Sakura story, so far it has 5 chapters. I use to have a laptop(no web) and it had over 8 chapters of my Sakura story, and some others. My dad put a virus on my computer, so all of my stories are gone. I actual finished my Digimon story, and Case Closed. But now, Ch. 2 of Digimon, and no chapters of my Case Closed story. .-.

Wow! You are really dedicated if you can write an entire story on your phone!

Why thank you, I love reading stories - and I just didn't want to be a reader, I wanted to be a writer. And if I have to walk, or "write" the extra mile to get my stories to show online, then so be it. Writing & Drawing is my passion, and I do believe, I do both, well for my age. I'm no Susan Johnson, or Miutsodeo Kimageo(Misspelled his name)- but I love to write & draw, and I'd do anything to become one those amazing authors/drawers, I know have a long way ahead, but I try.

:( Commiseration for the loss of stories. :/

the shortest published chapter I've ever seen was two words.

the shortest chapter I've ever written was 99 words.

so it just depends. I've had short stories that run from a couple hundred words to twenty-five thousand. However when I write chapters they tend to be short, 2-3k, so I post them either in groups or frequently.

btw, I've had sentences that run over 100 words too, so it's not that huge of a deal for me...

winks.

I guess its each to their own.

Personally i work better to word count goals eg aim for 5000 a chapter but i can get away with 4000. Then i write around 4500 a chapter keeping myself and my editor happy :P

There is no specific rule, at least there's none that I know of. I usually write a 2,000 word chapter, but that's just me. After that, my mind just usually goes blank. I guess it really depends on what you're comfortable with. After writing let's say 500 words and you feel that the chapter can stand by itself then you might say it's finished (the chapter). So yeah, it doesn't really matter how short or long just as long as you're satisfied with it.
