NaperVic Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 If you read Dom's works as often as some of us do, you start to notice typo's, favorite words, and other quirks of his writing. Now that Dom has Jim the Editor, those quirks are fewer and far between . This post isn't to complain about Dom's writing or to nit pick, just a fun place to point out some things that 'stick out' or are memorable. I don't see them as mistakes, but they're just part of the flavor of his writing. Of course we have the famous typos like: Lo(n)g Tit(t)les Coot(d)ies And then favorite words that stick out: incredulous smirk grateful Have any others that I've missed? Anything noteable? Take Care®, Vic
Tony Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 I like how Dom highlights a lot of things in italic. I very rarely see that in other writing, and I like it a lot. Also, I enjoy the way Rory repeats other people's questions incredulously, for example (This is something I made up) "Have you seen Eddie?" he asked. Have I seen Eddie? Who did this guy think I was? etc. Thanks for your awesome stories Dom Don't ever stop writing zhukant
NickolasJames8 Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 The best one for me was when Rory said, "After my talk with Jude,".......
Bao Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 lol in one of his earlier chapters of dd, like 4 or 3 im not sure and im too lazy to go look again lol. he messed up jude with jase again too.
rknapp Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 (edited) Disclaimer: This in no way is meant to offend anyone who actually has these names. Any resemblance to any person living or deceased is strictly coincidental. Good thing he hasn't used Rob then, isn't it? Not sure how I could take it since Robert is, even in my mind, a malicious type of name, or important/proper (royalty). Add to that the fact that I would be relating the character to myself constantly and saying "Hey! I don't do that!" and get weirded out everytime that I DO do something the character does.... OK! BACK ON TOPIC! Edited January 19, 2006 by rknapp
NaperVic Posted January 19, 2006 Author Posted January 19, 2006 Have any others that I've missed? Anything noteable? Or notable, perhaps? *ducking* Hey! No fair, I'm not the one who's every word & move is under a microscope! That's Dom hehe, good find! Vic
RISC Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 This made me think of text analysis, so I ran DD 31 through an anaysis site (textalyser.net) Frequency and top words : Word Occurrences Frequency Rank seth 180 2.9% 1 him 159 2.5% 2 you 159 2.5% 2 aaron 152 2.4% 3 just 77 1.2% 4 know 52 0.8% 5 like 50 0.8% 5 back 48 0.8% 5 luke 47 0.8% 5 get 41 0.7% 6 (I think it removed "I" "the" etc) I wasn't surprised about "seth" being at the top....
Tony Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 That's a very good thing. It shows that Dom uses a very large variety of synonyms instead of common words, such as said, or walked, and that's one of the reasons it is so interesting to read. I'm not surprised that Seth is used so often, because there's really no other way to say Seth without sounding foolish most of the time.
AFriendlyFace Posted February 12, 2006 Posted February 12, 2006 I wasn't surprised about "seth" being at the top.... Yep, I imagined Seth on top too.

AFriendlyFace Posted February 12, 2006 Posted February 12, 2006 Kevin, have I told you how much I love you? Kitty, former linguistics major who LOVES words Awww thanks Kitty you too! And that sounds like the coolest major! I realized after two semesters of Latin that the only reason I chose to take it as my foreign language was because I was interested word etymology. ***Sigh*** I could have just bought a book or something (or taken a class), gotten more of what I wanted and quite a bit less work. Anyway have a great day and take care, Kevin
RISC Posted February 12, 2006 Posted February 12, 2006 I always thought linguistics was cool too. Tolkien was a linguist and it was amazing to see how he used his knowledge to make his languages (they even have word roots and histories behind them). Etymology seems like a good enough reason to learn Latin. I wish I knew more Latin/Greek, especially with all of the scientific jargon I have to sift through (telencephawha...?). I really like the name "Jase" (though I spelled it, "Jayce"). Incidentally, I also have a "Grandma Alice" (we call her that). I think the "R"-vowel-"R"-vowel is awkward as well, but I'm trying to figure out why. Would it be awkward for someone who didn't speak English? Maybe it just comes from what we're used to, following that "R" with some sort of stop in the air flow. OK, I'm off to find a linguistics course that will count as biology...

OK, I'm off to find a linguistics course that will count as biology... VERY interesting point! I'm currently trying to learn Spanish and thus as well as studying on my own I'm constantly bugging my bilingual co-workers to tell me how to say everything in Spanish. So yesterday when I said "it's cold outside" and of course asked for a translation - I discovered that it was all but impossible for me to properly say the word for "outside": "fuera" (with the "ue" being pronounced like "wa" with a long "a" sound). I just can't seem to go from a "wa" sound to a "ra" sound. Other than that my accent isn't THAT bad. He even commented: "wow, it's weird that it's just that one word you can't say".
LittleBuddhaTW Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 I personally love the name Rory ... never heard it before DD ... but now I'm thinking if I have a son someday (hopefully), I'll probably name him Rory ... hehe

I just can't seem to go from a "wa" sound to a "ra" sound. I would say it's more a "weh" than a "wa" Fweh-ra I had heard the name Owen before, but after hearing it here I ended up really liking it. Come to think of it, I also really like the name Jude. Rory, meh. Not so much, but it's not bad. Edited February 22, 2006 by raz

I still can't say it properly though  I like names Owen and Jude too. I probably wouldn't call my son Jude though because I know I couldn't help but pull the "hey Jude!" line every time I addressed him. Geez poor kid I know if something cruddy happened I'd be tempted to say "hey Jude, don't make it bad..." On the other hand if I were dealing with my upset child I'd probably be less inclined to make bad jokes. Anyway take a sad song and make it better everyone! Kevin

writeincode Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 (edited) The 'finaglers' (fingers) typo of ch6 TLW had me laughing in the middle of the intense tent scene. Edited September 13, 2007 by writeincode
kashka Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 I personally love the name Rory ... never heard it before DD ... but now I'm thinking if I have a son someday (hopefully), I'll probably name him Rory ... hehe i actually really like that name too, one of my favourite among all that dom used. and yeah, i've known it before DD... though as a girl's name :> which made DD's rory look all the cuter in my eyes (the girl's version of rory was a main character in a WB series "gilmore girls")
clumber Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 The name "Rory" doesn't seem right to me... there's something awkward about the word that I can't put my finger on. If I try to say it out loud it feels like I can only just get my mouth around it (somebody is going to make a joke out of that...I can see it coming). The name "Quinn" seems to bug me a little as well... but that is because it feel...incomplete. It needs another sound on the end of it (although that would basically leave you with Quentin...) "Owen Dovan" on the over hand... just seems to work right. Can't explain it... I just like the sound of it.
