I loved reading the 50 Shades of Grey book and laugh my ass off at it (it's so bad it's good), so I'm interested in seeing whether or not they can make a legitimate movie out of it.

Is it just me or does Christian's line delivery sound incredibly similar to Edward Cullen's in the first Twilight movie? I kept expecting him to say, "I feel...very...protective...of...you." Which makes sense, because 50 Shades of Grey had it's origins as a Twilight erotic fanfiction, until it got so popular that she decided to publish it and had to change the names to avoid getting sued by Stephanie Meyer.

Oh look... they're making a lorno! Seriously, I cannot abide this whole thing. She wrote off her mistakes as 'Well, this was just fan-fiction.' Well, she published it--so the author and publisher should have made sure the quality was there. It wasn't, which drove me to get 3% in and stop wasting my time. If she cared that little about her quality, I didn't care to read it.

Snotty of me, I know. I feel the same way about the movie. Then again, I don't like chick flicks anyway. Give me aliens, crime, or explosions any day over that drivel!

See, the thing is, I like Jamie Dornan from his short stint on Once Upon A Time, and I've liked Dakota Johnson from the small supporting roles she's played, so I wonder if they both have it in them to elevate the shitty material into something good. I doubt it will happen, but it's possible.

And ick. I didn't read the novels, so I'm not going to watch these movies either. I saw "Bella" and "Edward" in their interactions, which is to be expected. Even if she sort of made the fanfiction a separate piece to be able to market it without legal repercussions. The development of those characters probably were the most maintained from Twilight - to the fanfic - to the published novel - and lastly to the film. I say both actors were given the first Twilight film and were told to study mannerisms and expressions, because a big marketing tool for them and this film IS the fact that it was once a Twilight fanfiction...

So I'm not alone in thinking that Christian in the trailer sounds a lot like Edward, then?

I thought it was hysterical that there was a character named Jose, Anastacia's swarthy dark-haired hot friend who is a rival for her affections. Gee, I wonder who E.L. based him off of.

Eh.......I pity the tweenagers and teens who grew up with this crap, they grew up reading and watching Twilight with perhaps the most evil character ever conceived (Yeah, Bella is real piece of work), then become poorly adjusted young adults and get into 50 shades of grey

Well, it depends on if you take the material seriously, or you're reading it with an "it's so bad it's good" mindset. I purely read it for the LOL's. I know people who watched Twilight purely to make fun of it.

Erm..., so..., you actually watched those?  :gikkle:

I think the trailer is enough to turn me off, and I was actually open-minded when I heard it.

I only saw twillight on tv and i was curious :P

If all will watch it = 12.1 mil x $10.00 movie = $121 mil in box office

The trailer now has 12.1 million views.

50 Shades began life on the web as Twilight fanfiction - hence the similar line delivery, the over use of de-saturation filters and the similar appearance of the characters. He could be the stand in for Edward and she would make a great Bella if Bella had 'lived' to be in her twenties.

I can happily file this away as "it'll be shit".

I haven't read the book at all but I wouldn't mind just to see what the fuss is about, I enjoyed twilight in book and in film, minus the terrible Bella. I had no idea this is a fan fic at all. Good to know. I hope it's hot, that's all I care to see, otherwise I wouldn't try to go see magic mike XXL when it decides to come out, cuz that was a shitty story, if you want to talk about bad movies.

sorry  :off:  but I thought that Magic Mike was good, for the first half. Then it decided it wanted to be a drugged-up burnout stoner movie, and got really shitty. Shame, because the first half had potential and it was funny, and sexy as dammitall.

I won't be going to see 50shades - as far as i could make out between the appalling grammar and diction, most of the book was about the ins and outs of female plumbing. I assume the film will follow a similar approach. no thanks.

The fact that this book was so utterly popular for so long proves most people don't know a good book if it slapped them in the face. Same with Twilight, and its the reason why the tag "New York Times Bestseller" doesn't persuade me to read a book.

I gotta give props to the author though. She put out a completely half-assed product and became super-rich doing it too. Now she's going to make even more money with a bunch of big-budget Hollywood movies.

Now it's 14.1 million views. Damn, that trailer's taking off. I haven't seen this since The Fault in Our Stars, a (vastly) better romance.

I don't think authors get royalties off the movie adaptions- I think they get one big lump upfront sum. Still, E.L. James has made a shitload of money off of such a horrible book.

Thats what I said. That up-front payment is far from being chump change.

Matt, you got to watch QVC or Sunday Infomercials, you want billion dollar crappy products. :P

That depends on the contract. Any author worth her salt would make sure she does get royalties for the movie adaptations. A few nice, comfy percentage points straight off the top. According to International Copyright Law, if you adapt someone else's work, you owe them royalties for it.

I wouldn't give two shits about 50 Shades if it weren't for the fact that it gives such a skewed image of BDSM. A proper dominant would never, ever behave as irresponsibly as Christian Grey. No aftercare, no safety, I mean, he's a psychopath, and people think this is sexy. It can lead people to enter into unhealthy BDSM relationships with irresponsible doms, which could be extremely harmful. This is why I refuse to have anything to do with it. I won't give a single penny to this franchise.

Elders React to the 50 Shades of Grey Trailer...

I seriously lost it when they started reading the passages. "My very own Christian Grey flavored popsicle..."

If the movie wants any kind of chance of being taken seriously, I hope they took out Ana's narrative voice. Dear god.

LOL.  Kind of sad one of the Elder participants died, hope not because of the film....  But anyways, I think there are bound to have a lot of curious people going to see the movie and definitely that's probably why the book sold for 100,000,000 copies, due to notoriety of it.  I didn't read the book, but from the passages they read in the YouTube video, come on..., even some of the nifty slashes are better than this and this novel sold for how many copies again?  But the reaction is a riot.  LOL.

Yep. That's why I want to see it, as well. Plus, I'm fascinated in seeing whether or not they can turn a "just for the shits" read into something legitimate.

I'm so out of touch, I didn't realise that it was now out!

I haven't read the book and didn't realise it was a fan fiction..

My nephew was screen tested 2x for the Christian role but obviously didn't get the part. Gutted for him, but I definitely would have gone to see it then!

Damn, your nephew had to have been pretty hot if he was getting screentested for it. Pictures or it didn't happen. :P
