methodwriter85 Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 (edited) So, yeah. Fifty Shades of Grey is being released this week in time for Valentine's Day. Fandango is reporting that its pre-sales are through the roof for an R-rated movie. Anyone planning on seeing the movie? Me, I absolutely loved reading the book for shits n giggles. Seriously, it was the most trainwreck-y "so bad it's good" read I've ever had. I would sit in the corner of Barnes and Noble, reading the book and laughing my ass off. I'm curious to see whether or not they were able to take such shitty source material and make it into a legitimate movie. Here's a clip: Yeah, they didn't remind me of Bella and Edward at ALL. LOL. Irritable1 Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 LOL, nope. Maybe for the giggles when it's out on Netflix. 1
eminem313 Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 I'm looking forward to the soundtrack....does that count? I wish Eminem was on it though
Caz Pedroso Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 (edited) I've read the books and I don't see how it can be made into a film and still keep true. I don't see how their going to get all of the womans internal dialogue in it without it being tacky voiceovers. I agree with Irri I may watch it if it comes down in price or comes out for a cheep rental. I am definitely not paying the price that odeon cinema is asking (they have added to the normal seating price) just because they call it a blockbuster! Edited February 9, 2015 by Cazpedroso
TetRefine Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 I'll watch it as a comedy, not as something to be taken seriously.
Irritable1 Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 I'll say this... shes not the most beautiful actress ever, which is kind of appealing in this kind of fantasy-romance movie. Not enough to shell out $9.75 for, but I'll give it a distant nod of approval. 1
methodwriter85 Posted February 9, 2015 Author Posted February 9, 2015 (edited) I'll watch it as a comedy, not as something to be taken seriously. That's basically my intention. I wish I could sit around a comedy club and have comedians read aloud passages from this horrible, horrible book. I'll say this... shes not the most beautiful actress ever, which is kind of appealing in this kind of fantasy-romance movie. Not enough to shell out $9.75 for, but I'll give it a distant nod of approval. Which is funny, because she's the daughter of 80's sex symbols Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson. I think Dakota Johnson is interesting-looking, but in a relatable way, which probably helps with the character. Movies are $9.75 where you live? We gotta pay like $11.50. I'm curious to see whether or not they were able to take such shitty source material and make it into a legitimate movie. I'm not and never have been curious about the book, though I've heard of it via the mainstream media. In my opinion, Anne Rampling (Anne Rice) did S&M right twenty years ago. I really don't know what all the fuss is about when the scene has been covered in so many books all the way back, what, a hundred years, to The Story of O, which was an unsatisfying read I thought, maybe because it was hetero, and even centuries ago, by the scandalous Rousseau, who made everything seem so awful. Been there, done that, got the tee shirt, what's the biggie? Oh well, the power of marketing, right? They're selling, and people are buying. That's the takeaway. It's all about the packaging, not so much what's in the package.

WestcliffWriter Posted February 14, 2015 Posted February 14, 2015 Just stick on a porn film at home and save your money! 1
methodwriter85 Posted February 14, 2015 Author Posted February 14, 2015 I wound up seeing the movie in a cut-rate discount theater that was nearly empty, so it wasn't the crazy, catcalling experience I was expecting. Oh, well. I thought the movie was alright. What impressed me was that Dakota Johnson was somehow able to make Ana seem real. 1
JamesSavik Posted February 14, 2015 Posted February 14, 2015 Nothing disturbs me more than BDS&M type stuff. I'm not dissing it. I just DON'T want to watch it. *shudders, hides under the covers*
Irritable1 Posted February 14, 2015 Posted February 14, 2015 I thought the movie was alright. What impressed me was that Dakota Johnson was somehow able to make Ana seem real. That agrees with the review I read. Impressive, considering how lousy the book is supposed to be.
Andrew Todd Posted February 14, 2015 Posted February 14, 2015 Never knew this dreck started as 'fan fiction' until this week. I have no interest in seeing it. I'm not surprised that the movie is supposed to be better than the source material as Sam Taylor-Johnson is a respectable director, but reading the stories about all the clashes she had with the 'author' of the books make me cringe. I could see the studio giving power to an established or even good author, but to give this hack so much power over the film is insane. If the director had cast her hot husband (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) in the lead I might have seen it, but neither of the leads has the looks or charisma to make me suffer through the story. Honestly, if I want to watch porn, then I'll go to one of the hundreds of sites that offer far better material. 1
methodwriter85 Posted February 14, 2015 Author Posted February 14, 2015 That agrees with the review I read. Impressive, considering how lousy the book is supposed to be. Yeah. It's really lousy. I was expecting a big trainwreck, but it wasn't really one. Dakota made Ana actually seem like a real 21st century college student, instead of this chick who's somehow never used email, talks like a 12-year old girl, has never had a drink in her life before the bar scene, etc etc. 1
methodwriter85 Posted February 18, 2015 Author Posted February 18, 2015 (edited) Fifty Shades of Grey Earns 93 Million Dollars Over President's Day Weekend I get the feeling that Jamie Dornan REALLY doesn't want to be part of this, but he's pretty much locked into two sequels now. Dude, enjoy being the fanfic Edward Cullen for the next two years. LOL. Speaking of, it's a shame they can't let Jamie keep a beard in the movie. He looks damn hot with one: Without the beard, he just looks so generic. Oh, well. Edited February 18, 2015 by methodwriter85 2
Irritable1 Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 Wow, he's adorable with the beard. I like his sad little eyebrows too 1
blake_logan Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 Perhaps Mr. Dornan was typecast in the role of Christian Grey. In the TV series, The Fall, he spends a lot of time tieing up his victims.
Caz Pedroso Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 There is a thread on my friends Facebook page about this film. Some of us had read Tiffany Reisz, she writes a bi series about BDSM. We suggested getting a couple of her characters together with Christian Grey and teaching him the real meaning of BDSM. He may still be able to walk after, but it would be a close thing.
Never Surrender Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 I've seen it! It gave me some of the worst fits of giggles of my life, and apparently I didn't take it 'seriously' enough Personally I think I took it slightly too seriously, by asking my friend whether Mr Grey uses Sensodyne toothpaste to hold an ice cube in his mouth for that long... perhaps its better to embrace the film instead of viewing it from a very literal approach. I will say though, they gave the female lead a lot more credibility in the film than they did in the books, a.k.a they gave her a bit of a backbone, which was nice to see. Overall its a great movie to watch with your friends for a laugh, but not much more than that in my opinion
Hermetically Sealed Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Nothing disturbs me more than BDS&M type stuff. I'm not dissing it. I just DON'T want to watch it. *shudders, hides under the covers* I wouldn't take anything related to this story as being truly representative of BDSM. It's purely about an abused sociopathic stalker who forces a woman into an abusive relationship. It just uses BDSM tropes as window dressing. 1
Celethiel Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 why they'll make a movie out of anything wont they...
