It took two pans of boiling water to dislodge the 8" or so long frozen ice plug. Fun times. I had lulled myself into complacency since we had a couple of nice days and it had gone off a few times during those days without incident. Silly me. I'll be more diligent with the arctic blast heading our way. It's actually been a beautiful day here, although quite windy. The sun managed to peek out from the clouds for a little bit. The winds are picking up again, because they're bringing a nice bout of lake effect snow. We'll see how much we'll actually end up with, but predictions are anywhere from 4" to 2 feet. Making breakfast this morning was fun too. First I flung some of the cauli rice and sausage I was digging out of a plastic container onto the floor. Then the egg I wanted to fry decided it wanted to be on the floor too instead of the pan. With the way my luck is running, I better get out some candles and my battery-operated lantern in case I lose power. I hope your day improves and you dont need candles (cause if it follows the start of your day... 🚒🧯 ) 5 2

Popular Post dughlas Posted February 5, 2021 Popular Post Posted February 5, 2021 It is a not very pleasant day here. Despite the temp remaining in the low 50's/11-12° all day it has been damp. We've had bouts of light rain off and on. There's also just enough breeze to make it chilly. I'm currently sipping at a large mug of Scottish Breakfast tea with milk and honey. 2 4

My mare seems like she's losing weight steadily... and she eats really well. I have a bad feeling, but I don't want her to die in her stall. I think I worry too much.... 1 1 4

Hopefully she'll gain weight in spring Her teeth are fine. I know what to look for... I was taught how to float teeth, and there are no hooks and while half her food is pellets, the sweet feed grain that is the other half, is well digested. I wormed her in late November, but I might do it again this coming week. She's perky at least, and she has a great, healthy looking winter coat, but the fat is moving away from her backbone like it hasn't before. She's looking old.... 3 4

Her vertebrae are visible on her backside in a way they weren't before. She moves a little stiffly at the end of a day, but she still has a few years left in her. I've no doubt your mare is well looked-after, and as long as she's comfortable, that's all that matters. 1 4

But they do say that accidents tend to come in threes. Let's see... Sump pump - that's number one... Cauli rice and sausage - and there's number two... Egg on floor - and now you're at number three! Looks to me like you're safe for the rest of the day, Val. Edited February 5, 2021 by Marty Tidying up 1 6

I'm currently sipping at a large mug of Scottish Breakfast tea with milk and honey. Today was an unusually mild and sunny day here. I didn't get as much work done in the garden as I might have, though. I found out that an organic garden centre not too far away from me is still open, so broke my self-imposed quarantine and drove up to see what they had. I came home with two one-year old apple trees, one cooker and one eater, plus a one-year old plum tree. All three are grafted onto semi-vigorous rootstocks, which means they should grow to about 4 metres (13 feet) high; although they could be kept pruned below that if I want to. Apparently the advantage of a semi-vigorous, rather than a dwarfing or semi-dwarfing rootstock is that the trees will finish up with more vigorous root systems, and so be less liable to wind damage. I also got eight bare-rooted raspberry canes. Yay, me! What a good Friday it turned out to be! 1 6

I think you said she's coming on the 29? While that means she can no longer be considered a young horse, she's certainly not super old either, and hopefully could still have a good number of years left. 5 1
