I'm not sure simple words can adequately describe what life was like back then without exposing the harsh realities young and older gay men and women of all types, colors, and persuasions had to live with back then. I was there, I lived the idiocy, the mind-numbing lack of education, and worst of all, the blatant lies, along with the mistruths. @Tim Hobson writes a story called Coming of Age, I strongly recommend that you take a moment to put it on your reading list. It sparked memories for me and what our world was like back then; it wasn't pretty and at times downright ugly. We all owe a debt of gratitude to those who spoke up about the inequity. The pushing of medical science to understand what was happening to us, and yes...eventually to our other brothers and sisters on the other side of the coin. It was personal for me, one of my dearest friends was a hemophiliac and depended on blood transfusions to have any semblance of a "normal" life. Sadly, he passed well before his time from a tainted blood infusion. I digress, this story looks like it will hopefully open some eyes. Never forget that the life and rights we have are thanks to those who passed before us.
