So glad to see that things are finding a semblance of solid ground, it's way too early, but a lifeline has been tossed, no impending decisions to wade thru at the immediate moment, no doubt that they are coming. The sharp crack of shattering ceramic rang out behind me, followed by the sound of my mother’s voice, no, screaming. Splitting through the house like a fire alarm. Time seemed to stall. My heart stuttered in my chest as I turned to see her face-to-face with my father, her hands shaking, her voice raw with fury and fear. She wasn’t holding back anymore. “You hit him!” she screamed, shoving at my dad’s chest with both hands. “You hit our son!” It was like watching something snap inside her. Years of silence, of backing down, of trying to keep the peace, it was all gone. She was on fire now, standing between me and him, her whole body shaking as she held her ground, pushing him back. And to my disbelief, my father actually stepped back. Not because he wanted to, but because, for once, someone had stopped him.

We now know the humans aren't invincible...now to connect with others and hopefully those who brought down the alien ship...

I only ask as it is a large part of this first chapter, alluding to, but not fully explaining why the differences are so stark between your two protagonists...it is the main part of the shifting dynamic and it raised my curiosity. Please note, as the author you need to create this story as you intend, I am simply along for the ride as it were...

Having watched a couple of shows on smugglers at airports and other places, I am never surprised by the great lengths these folks go to 'hide' the stuff they should not be carrying. To Catch a Smuggler is on Nat Geo. That Jasper and all were "only" smuggling pocketbooks and perfume is a joke, considering the money to be made smuggling other stuff. The blowback is going to be very interesting to say the least....Let's not forget that this all happened because Jasper was stalking Toby, and if not stalking, then what was he doing in the first place???

Well...there's twist...will the new arrivals hold the same possibility Ray does? I don't think it is going to be the dreaded Mother-in-Law...unless she's more like this...when no one is looking....
