    The Watcher

The Watcher The watcher sat motionless for more than an hour thinking his future. It was time to mark the chosen and begin their training, but he had no idea who they were or where. In the past they had been grouped closely together, this time however they could be anywhere... Only the calling would tell. They would be five years old as demanded by the ritual. The sun began it's slow ascension above the mountain bathing one of the twin waterfalls in light, but keeping the other in darkness a
  2. Some faery tales start with a kiss; some end with a kiss. They all take place in a perfect world. Well, if you don't count the wicked step-mother and the prince-eating dragon. This is my version of a modern faery tale. There are no wicked step-mothers nor prince-eating dragons, but not everything is exactly perfect either. And it all starts with a kiss...

    Tale 12

There was a rustling in he shrubbery then a young man appeared holding between his hands the gossamer threads of an intact spider's web. At its center were two insects; one was the maker of the web and the other a butterfly trapped in it. Garnet stopped in front of Cardanniel and presented him with the web. His only covering was his hair that rolled along his body like fire in the fading sunlight. "Does this meet your challenge?" he asked, meeting Cardanniel's eyes with fury. "I don't know, I

    Tale 11

"Interesting, most interesting," came the voice of a puckered old man sitting at the edge of the group of friends. Cardanniel looked at him as he took a seat along the opposite edge and smiled as he asked, "And what do you find so interesting?" "Ah, young one, not so fast, it is not your turn for the asking of a question. I do believe it was Garnet's turn just before you arrived. You are playing are you not?" "I am," Cardanniel nodded. The gnarled man turned to the creature Cardannie

    Tale 10

Just through the illusionary great doors there was a vestibule in which sat a box engraved with strange runes. Knowing he was hidden by the illusion, and pretty certain that there were eyes watching him to see what he would do once he passed the first test of knowledge, Cardanniel stepped up to the box. While strange, they were not unknown once he worked out their pattern. They had only been changed like the ebb and flow of the sea, but that would make sense as this was supposed to be the temple

    Tale 8

Cardanniel woke up naked on a stone alter. He had nothing, not even his heart-dagger with him. "Interesting, you are," said a small bald, blind man who wore a silver and black garment which shimmered and appeared to be samite, "interesting indeed." Cardanniel watched him as best he could from where he lay, unable to move. Around the man's useless eyes were dark black circles and on his cheeks were runic symbols similar to those on Cardanniel's sword. "How?" "Oh, no. No. No. No. Do not s

    Tale 7

The last heavily buttered currant scone sat on the plate between them as Cardanniel explained to the innkeeper about his daughter's condition and how to keep her healthy. The innkeeper understood his role quite easily, but was uncertain as to if the child would attempt to steal his soul. "She did not steal mine and she fed quite well," Cardanniel chided him. "But you are protected, you said so yourself," the innkeeper argued. "And you can be protected too. It's quite simple really," Car

    Tale 6

It was nearing dusk several nights later and Cardanniel had promised Dart a dinner they did not have to cook and rest on something softer than the hard ground. Dart had not believed him at first, but as life-giver settled nearer the horizon Cardanniel pointed out the barely visible edges of a building ahead. All that separated them from it was a few minutes ride and a crossroad. Truth be told, Cardanniel worried more about the crossroad than the ride. As they approached the nexus, he slowed t

    Tale 5

They had been on the road for two full days and Dart had yet to speak to Riva, who chattered unceasingly about everything. Cardanniel's nerves were raw as they set up camp. Death-bringer was higher in the sky than she had been on any of the previous nights and Cardanniel was starting to wonder if she would be beginning her descent again soon. Tonight, he tended the horses that Dart purchased and his donkey which he refused to give up as he had on the previous nights as they set up camp. Riva pro

    Tale 4

Cardanniel woke up slowly to the low hum of voices in the darkness around him. "I think he's waking, Dart. You really shouldn't have brought him here," came an angry female whisper. "Where else was I supposed to bring him? He risked his life for Riva." "She would have survived the bite once her system had time to rid itself of the poison." "He didn't know that," Dart whispered back. "Just like he didn't know better than to try and heal me. He just did it. He's a good man, mama, and he b

    Tale 3

Upon his return to his room, Cardanniel inspected it for signs of entry and found none. With a sigh of relief he entered and gathered a change of clothing, he needed to find the baths. Leaving behind anything that could be stolen while he soaked away the travel grime, he rewarded the door and went in search of the bathhouse. At the door, he paid his entry fee then paid extra for privacy. When the attendant asked him to choose a companion Cardanniel looked over the expectant faces and chose a

    Tale 2

Cardanniel sat on his bedroll as far from the camp the others had made as possible without seeming to be separate of it. His donkey had made herself at home in the corral with the horses and his gear all seemed to be as he had left it. The roasted fowl had been succulent, even if a little crispy on the outside and raw against the bone. Definitely a step above the badger he had eaten three nights before. The camp settled down to sleep and the messenger sped across the heavens on its twice-nightly

    Tale 1

Cardanniel trudged wearily along the path as the ancestors awoke in the heavens. His only companion brayed at his rough treatment in continuing after the life-giver had died the little death, but Cardanniel knew there were accommodations on the other side of this ravine, if they could just get to them. Ahead their last obstacle loomed, a narrow wooden bridge barely big enough for a single cart to pass without brushing the sides. Cardanniel paused and pulled up the cowl on his habit, the garment

    Card Tales

Card Tales was written to a challenge to help me get over my writer's block. It is a series of interwoven tales with a single main character, Cardanniel, who gets into a bunch of trouble. At the top of each tale will be a list of required elements. These were part of the challenge. Please note there are continuity errors, and I am aware of them.

    Glossary

Glossary: Aglaia, the dark face of the goddess that chose Cardanniel, is very active in his life unlike some of the other gods/goddesses. Her 'priests' are called her vengeance and do her bidding while appearing to be other things, such as priests of other orders. It is a long kept secret that Aglaia is the mistress of the life-giver whom the priests call the green man and only those who can see her can serve her. Aglaia personally keeps all the souls of her priests so soul-stealing creatures

    Spring Break

Kazander, age 16 "Three years at this damn school and they finally let me try out for the swim team. Three damn years!" Zander flung his clothes on the bed. His roommate, Rick was laughing. "What's so damn funny?" "You. You're in great shape. Are you worried you won't make the team? All those stolen hours of practice and lost sleep gone to waste? What is the problem?" Zan started to laugh. "You're right. It's just I was supposed to be allowed to swim from the start. The coach is an idi

    An Ending

Gypsy, age 18 Gypsy was pacing waiting for Zander to come home. "I should have told him over the winter break." He said out loud to no one. "Damn it. I should have told him then." "Told who what?" Dan poked his head in the room. "Nothing that concerns you yet. When are Rick and Zan coming home?" "Should be anytime now. What's up? I haven't seen you this nervous in a long time." Gypsy just kept pacing. It was sometime later that the guys arrived home. Gypsy was the first out to the c

    Innocence Lost

Kazander, age 11 Zander hated being so unsure, especially when he had fantasies about sex. Hormones hadn't quite started raging through his body changing it, but he got a hard on occasionally, and had wet dreams. It was especially bad on nights like this when Kray had friends over. Kray was 16 and had make out parties all the time. There was one guy, Tyler, who was one of Kray's best friends that Zander practically worshipped. Zander put on his swim suit, the one his mother didn't know he ha

"This is what I get for living an easy life!" He had certain things packed he couldn't live with out for all summer. Included was his laptop. He had finally made a name for himself, or at least enough of one he opened a Swiss account to store his money. His job was simple... Try to break into security syst

    Happy Birthday

Kazander, age 18 "I'm going to miss you Lura, and you too you little monster!" Zander picked up Ryker, his 19-month-old son. "I'll see you guys at Thanksgiving." "Come on Zander, you've got to get to school sometime today... You've got practice." Rick yelled at him from the car. "I know. I know. Are you going to try and make a meet or two?" Lura nodded. "I love you. Really, I do." He hugged the little guy and put him down. "Be good for Gypsy, Dan, and Petros." He got in the car and Ric
  23. The Watcher The watcher gathered his company, they came from all over the universe to aide the chosen ones. It was time for the marking. A gilded silver ring suspended by star shine would test the heart of each who answered the call. None knew which chosen they would serve, some would be made aware today, some wouldn't know until the path was made clear. Each would plunge his left hand into the ring, if chosen to aide or protect the wrist would be marked. If not chosen, the person would die.

Five year old Zachariah leaned against the pole that held up the chain-link fence around the playground at his elementary school. He was currently doing time for something a classmate claimed he had done. He might have. He didn't really remember. He had been distracted at the time. However, that day, he was g
