Aww... thanks for such nice compliments It hurts me too, thinking of some of the abuse people with disabilities have to endure. People tend to be afraid of what they don't understand and lash out inappropriately. If they took the time to get to know them as people, they'd be surprised at what they find, I think. At least I would hope, anyway. Thanks for reading.

People with Down syndrome are very unassuming, honest, and will usually try their heart out for you. At least in my experience. They tend to have such joy in their hearts and it can be very infectious when working with them. I'm glad the story gave you a new perspective. Thanks for the comments, and I'm glad you liked it

Thank you so much for the kind comments, tim. No research... just over ten years experience working with adults with developmental disabilities. I'm beyond thrilled that my story touched so many people.

Thanks so much, Sasha I work with adults with developmental disabilities and have several individuals with Down syndrome on my caseload. Peter is a mixture of several different people. The use of "April Fool", hand waving, hopping around, and his sexuality are based on people that are or have been on my caseload. I'm so glad the authenticity came through.

Thank you so much, Gary Peter is a mixture of several individuals I have known throughout the years. I had someone on my caseload once who used to say "April Fool" whenever he made a mistake, so he was the inspiration for the theme. And yes, they are very direct, honest people. There's no pretension, which is such a refreshing thing to be around.

LOL Yeah, I guess I did combine both themes. I based the aide on comments/behavior I see from staff in the dayhabs where I work. She wasn't deliberately inconsiderate or inattentive to his needs, but rather it was her way of working with a population she didn't quite understand. I'm betting that after Peter's comments she'll change the way she talks to all the students in the classroom. Thanks for the comments, Tim. I'm glad you liked the story.

I loved writing this story. These individuals are dear to my heart and way too often overlooked in all facets of their lives. Bringing them to the spotlight means the world to me. I am absolutely over the moon that people thought enough of this story to vote it into first place.

Thanks so much, Kitt I hope I was able to help people understand the depth and understanding that people with Down syndrome possess. They are some of the most amazing people I know.

Thanks for the great review, droughtquake. People with Down syndrome are very capable when given the chance. I've heard of several individuals with Down syndrome who have started their own businesses. There are quite a few actors/actresses out there--the actress on "American Horror Story" comes to mind. She also is a runway model, which I think is so fantastic. I think that sexuality is something that's not really addressed with the developmentally disabled. They have sex-ed classes, but I'm not sure how much they talk about sexuality, so maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, thanks again for the comments. I really appreciate it.

Thanks so much, LBO It took me a long time to think of the title and I was pretty proud of it. I'm glad you liked the story so much
  24. I can't say it much better than Mac, Lyssa, and tim said. We all make mistakes. It's how we deal with them that matters.
  25. Thanks so much, Gary
