I love that the Magic Realism feeling that permeates the story is off set with awkward , candid , blunt , ‘on the table ‘ interactions between Finn and Sam and Finn and Christian .

A captivating start, the integrity that Fin shows by ending the party and even sending Trevor on his way , to honour a promise made as an eight year old boy is astounding and strangely endearing .

14 days of absolute silence and solitude, no seeing another person or interaction if you did not want to , except at meal times. Nelson did drive up from our holiday home into the mountains to be with me for 2 hours a day . Put much of my fucked -up A type life into perspective . Brought clarity to many things I’ve been too afraid and too unwilling to face .

Quite different with Ethan’s emphasis on working to get things back on track , flowers and a trip , instead of surrendering to apathy. His subsequent angry reaction is quite justified!

Absolutely heartening , our first ever GLBT Pride March was held in Johannesburg in 1990 , to highlight and decriminalize Homosexuality. Most marchers wore masks, paper bags and other disguises . The Drag Queens ( barring their fabulous make-up) , Dykes on Bikes ( marshals ) , a couple of friends and I did not . It was pretty sad .... but we’ve come a long , long way since then.

Breaking down the walls of a comfort zone , no matter how dreary, is bound to leave an amalgam of emotions. Once you settle down , though you feel different , changed , the realization that life , the same place , Town , people and things are around you , remain unchanged can leave you quite out of sorts .The Buddists say, ‘ before enlightenment chopping wood and carrying water , after enlightenment chopping wood and carrying water!’ Andy’s handling of Eric’s mood was inspired.

Andy’s company and just a little attention has been the catalyst that is changing Eric’s world from one of survival to one of living. Gardens are essential to life , they ground , inspire , ensnare and then astound you with beauty ... then the process starts again as the season changes .

At the moment I’m with Eric on this , damn , my 80 year old mother is more computer literate than I am. When she calls for help on the thing I’m lost before she finishes her explanation . Although I’m left with a feeling that under Andy’s guidance a whole series of new experiences are in Eric’s future.
